So, all the stuff that wouldn't immediately spring to my mind, but you basically summed up what I was thinking. I'm long over the anime shyness that I had when I started out, wondering what the cashier would think of me for buying this sort of stuff at my local Borders, but I've still never been able to shake the awkwardness of watching anime on planes or public transport.
Guess I'll go with GOTS, one of those Adult Swim era show's that I keep meaning to get around to, think I've only ever seen like half an episode of it. Might be nice to dispense with the moe-moe for once, I'm sure I'll get more than my fill of that at my destination if you know what I mean

There's nothing inherently embarrassing about it, he just doesn't want something weird to unexpectedly pop up on-screen while in close proximity to strangers.
