I wouldn't even say gamers specifically, or even really otaku. Indeed, I would say that it's on the opposite side of the spectrum in that the series contains a protagonist and side characters who exhibits traits which are appealing to the mainstream, that of the typical shonen protagonist. The wish fulfillment aspect lies in Kirito himself with him being an OP Garry Stu 'bad-ass' chick magnet as much, or even more so, than the setting. You only have to look at every other popular shonen ever to see what I mean.

To be fair, SAO is rather compelling in terms of setting and theme. I kind of get where Kayaba was coming from in his desire to take a cross-section of humanity and contain it the way he did, seeing whether people could adapt and form their own society, or simply self-destruct. Shame it was all contained into such a generic shonen package.

You do realize the reason Kayaba himself gave for why he designed the game the way he did was "I don't remember", right? What you just said is merely a theory Kirito had.

Actually, it's my theory based based largely on the book. I don't remember the specific details that gave me that impression, but it was formed from Kayaba's direct commentary on the subject. My above post was just a loose interpretation of the overall effect, not actually my full impression of what he was attempting to achieve (which is long and I only half remember it anyway).

Content wise, not a lot. The side stories that take place earlier in the anime are volume 2 of the LN's, but that's the only really critical difference, everything in the books of the Aincrad arc was covered by the anime as far as I can remember. Rather, the books have a little more exposition and take advantage of the format to explain things in narrative monologue that would be infodumpy for characters to say in the anime (and so were omitted). Stuff just tends to make more sense in the book.
