I wouldn't even say gamers specifically, or even really otaku. Indeed, I would say that it's on the opposite side of the spectrum in that the series contains a protagonist and side characters who exhibits traits which are appealing to the mainstream, that of the typical shonen protagonist. The wish fulfillment aspect lies in Kirito himself with him being an OP Garry Stu 'bad-ass' chick magnet as much, or even more so, than the setting. You only have to look at every other popular shonen ever to see what I mean.
To be fair, SAO is rather compelling in terms of setting and theme. I kind of get where Kayaba was coming from in his desire to take a cross-section of humanity and contain it the way he did, seeing whether people could adapt and form their own society, or simply self-destruct. Shame it was all contained into such a generic shonen package.
