Is there anything that if a friend does, you should automatically stop being friends with that person such as starts smoking, breaks the law, gets a tatoo, piercing?
this is the most absurdly shallow, i would not become friends with someone who holds views like this, and in regards to the question, if someone is important to me almost nothing they can do will make me want to stop being friends with them
This. The notion that you can only have friends who are just like you or that you can't remain friends if they mess up is stupid and will keep you from learning from others and experiencing friendships you might not otherwise. Granted you shouldn't let friends influence you to do things you believe are wrong but you can still be a friend to them even if they are different or if they do something that is wrong in your eyes, or even if they wrong you. They may need a friend more than ever during these times.
A true friend who really cares will stick with you even when the friendship stops being easy and gets complicated. They will always make a way for you. They won't only come around when they can get something from you or for you to make them feel good. They will be there for you when you need them as well. Those that walk away as soon as the friendship gets prickly are often better to let go. They likely never really cared to
being
begin with.

Those examples suggest a shallow being. As for stopping being friends, it has to be a betrayal of a specific kind and it has to be a continual ongoing thing. Like consistently talking crap behind one's back or seeking to humiliate. There's a huge difference between doing something bad out of an accident or as part of a trend (misguidance/naivety), and being downright malicious.
I'm naturally shy and tend to avoid people unless I can't help it. But another reason why I avoid people is because I experienced malice when I was a kid, from a neighbour who became my worst bully. She used to threaten me and deliberately do my homework wrong, homework I was perfectly capable of doing myself. As a result, I particularly avoided girls when I was at school.
But then when I started college a girl came up to me and asked for friendship, and we have been friends for 6 years now. She introduced me to her own friends and I just ended up becoming part of this link.
Misguidance and naivety can be looked over, or solved by making suggestions and putting them on the right path if it's a dangerous habit such as smoking. Everyone has their own flaws, and stopping being friends because of them is stupid, narrow-minded, and just comes to show that anyone exercising that line of thinking isn't even worthy of making friends in the first place. But even worse than that is malice. Of all the seven deadly sins, I consider wrath to be the most costly and envy to be just pure evil. I feel lucky to have friends who are patient in spite of experiencing flaws and not having an envious or malicious nature.

I used to despise non-tattooed, non-pierced, non-smokers...but I have learned to tolerate them and some of them are now even my friends!

I choose to not make many friends- I am a misanthrope (Look it up if you don't know what one is).

I often wonder at the definition people place on the word 'friend'.
Most of the people I've had in my life could be more properly called acquaintances. Some of these relationships have lasted for many years at different levels of involvement.
For instance, the people in your workplace who you get along well with, have a limited social life with and so on - but never see again once you change jobs. Or maybe meet up with a few times a year. Not, imo, in the category of 'friend'.
Similarly the people you spend time with due to shared interests (a hobby, parents of your childrens' friends, a good neighbour and so forth). But, again, once the circumstances that brought you into each others circle changes, the glue that binds you breaks and you go on your separate ways, often indiscernibly and without any acrimony.
These sorts of relationships may be wonderful at the time offering company, social activities, moral and emotional support, sometimes even practical or financial support. But they don't hit the criteria (for me) as 'friends'.
I have 3 people I consider friends. My dearest I have known for 56 years. We've had our periods of intense closeness and activity along with our long-distance maintenance, depending on our personal circumstances at the time. We have also argued bitterly on a few occasions.
Acquaintances are fun, but true friendship endures and won't vanish in a puff of disapproval just because of a tattoo or a cigarette.
