After reading all thirty-two pages of this thread, I'm still not sure about this skill. While adding a little flare to the food industry sounds like a good idea, it seems like a bit of an extra hassle skinning everything. Plus, I don't like the thought of always having a knife with me to get all of a monsters drops. The one space that knife takes in my inventory is one food item I can't bring, one prayer potion I can't fit in, or one drop I have to leave behind.
The biggest flaw I see in the plan is this: if I kill a dragon, but lack the Butchery level to carve said dragon, wouldn't I also be unable to recieve the bones and hide? It really wouldn't make sense if the bones and skin fell off, but the corpse still needs carved, and it obviously wouldn't be fair if existing dragon hunters had to get a fairly high level in a new skill just to continue their way of getting money.
There are benefits, of course, like more money per kill and a signifigant boost to the food industry, but I believe that the negatives outweigh the positives. If this does become a skill, I can almost guarentee plenty of controversy.
Sorry to be a dream crusher, but I'm just stating the facts as I see them.
On another note, I, unlike many other enemies of this idea, do recognize and respect the vast difference between a butcher and a cook.

Kingsmay,
I sincerely thank you for your comments. You may have finally explained to me (at least in a way I understand) what I now believe Mod Crow stated way back on page 3.
So put into the context you stated, he may have been saying: A butchery skill would have to replace the current drop system so that when killing a dragon, for example, players would gain the bones and hides through leveling their butchery skill rather than through traditional combat. That would really mean everyone would need to work harder to achieve what is already possible unfortunately.
Now that makes perfect sense to me.
My thoughts on this have been that Jagex couldn't (and shouldn't) change anything that is already being dropped (like bones and hides) and should just add a carcass that can be butchered. No it doesn't make perfect sense but changing these drops would create havoc for sure.
As far as the inventory slot, I felt that if you wanted to butcher the carcass where it was dropped you needed to carry a knife but if you just wanted to bank the carcass for later butchering or sale no knife was necessary.
I used to have several thousand knives in my bank when I was woodcutting and fletching on the spot. When my inventory was full of logs, I would fletch them all and then drop the knife and cut one more log to fill the empty inventory slot. (the log was worth much more than the knife), run to the bank, deposit all, grab a new knife, and repeat. I guess I envisioned the same thing with Butchery.
You are definitely not a dream crusher. The butchery idea came from the dissatisfaction of always needing to take fish into battle when I believe other things should be available. Maybe I just prefer a good steak to a piece of fish.
Thanks again for your well spoken comments.
