My response isn't exactly on cue with this question but it reminded me of something I have wondered about for years. Why can't we always be facing north upon every tele (unless that would obstruct our view). It would help a great deal to orient us (especially when new to the game).

Also, and again not exactly on cue to this thread, but related to locale orientation and I as well as others complained about the north arrow. I KNOW you think it's correct but it isn't. (Okay, maybe in England it is correct, idk). You always have the more dominate arrow facing north and, in this case in RS, that would be the red arrow. This is because the dominate arrow, be it by color, thickness of line or any other distinction catches the eye. I work in a field where north area is important to the job and I promise you, you're north arrow is confusing and it confused the hell out of me when I first started playing this game.

When you right click a compass you can Face North/South/East/West. how about just update the camera directions and include the direction a player avatar faces. Does that sound good?

Well, technically there is. Not being able to move freely really hinders animations. They end up looking very clunky, not as smooth, and very jagged appearing. This causes jenky player animations to become very noticeable.
