Hehe, sounds like a fun quest :-)

It sure does! The puns and references are Jagex-worthy.

Only (nitpicky) "issue" is that, if Zanaris orbits the same way as Earth's moon, there is no real 'dark side'. Unless Zanaris has a rotation period equal to a year (instead of a month), so the same side of the moon is always turned at the sun and one side away? Would also explain why the base doesn't get noticed if it's an actual perma-dark region.

I don't have a source handy, but I'm pretty sure it was said somewhere that Zanaris is tidal locked with Gielinor, meaning that only one side ever faces it; in any event Jagex once mentioned the possibility of visiting "the Dark Side of Zanaris" (during the 2019 annual survey), so if I'm wrong about there being confirmation that it's tidal-locked already, it seems that Jagex is at least operating under that assumption, so until they say otherwise I'm treating it as canon.

If it's tidal locked with Gielinor (which is quite common with moons and celestial bodies) it will have the same side to Gielinor, but just like our moon, there's still a day-night cycle that lasts a month. There's a near and far side, but the 'dark side' just moves around and isn't a fixed place. Full moon = 'midday' on the near side, new moon = 'midnight' on the near side. A common misconception, certainly after Pink Floyd's album.
With the musical elements from Ping and Pong, theu sure could refer to that somehow.

At the poles, you would get some eternal twilight zone though with a unique ecosystem, certainly if there happens to be a crater there in perpetual shadow.
The Twilight Zone: another tv series they could refer to! :)
There are some episodes that deal with the cold war and interplanetary travel since it's from the sixties, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched either. A name-drop to Rod Serling would be easy (Rod Sealing?), and perhaps mention a 'scary door' for the Futurama parody for the real die-hards.
Man, this stuff just writes itself!
