Tooltips don't show up on your actionbars when the actionbars are locked - maybe a ninja update to allow us to toggle that so that they can be shown even when the actionbars are locked? (I say a toggle, because some might prefer not to have those tooltips active when in a boss fight that they already know their abilities well) Things may be looking down now, but I see a light at the end of the tunnel;
Do you think I should get off the tracks?

I generally would show tooltips at all times, but allow players to both simplify (i.e. the tooltip says what an item/ability does, but not in detail - generally what we had in early iterations of the EoC), as well as disabling them globally - as well as adding a toggle to not show them while in combat. That they're solely not shown on a locked action bar is somewhat weird behaviour to be fair. Improvements: Tooltip / (F2P) QoL v2

Messed around a bit around more with some of the new things. The task list interface is great. It's for the first time you actually can know what your achievement diaries (or whatever they are called right now) would actually offer you without checking some third party source.

The Tome of Um as an item certainly is extremely overcluttered with information as it stands, so for things like that it probably still would be better to have that as some right-click check (+ the task list interface, which gives this information more structured.). Considering it's just a medium diary right now, it only will become worse.

Actually if boxes are going to be filled with so much detailed text, I would rather not have them as tooltips, but some right-click option instead. I really dislike hovering over an item, and then getting a textbox that fills a quarter of the playing area. I think that is a misunderstanding of what tooltips are supposed to be. For instance the skilling outfits, they have a wall of text about all the set effects and what other outfit pieces are needed to make up the set. That should be a right-click option in my opinion. Similar to how a sign of porter has a right-click option to show what items it works on. That is not in the tooltip.

Also there are some cases where even minimal information is put into a right-click option, where they could perhaps be in the tooltip. The autoscreener from invention has no tooltip (other than showing the left-click option), but it has a right-click "check" option which shows the charge drain and the currently stored charges. Those are just two numbers, and could easily be displayed in a tooltip, especially as it doesn't already have a tooltip.

Mouseover tooltips are generally made for items, that feature besides generic properties (such as armour, damage or stat bonuses) something like an activation effect and 1-2 unique passive (or up to a third one if it can't be activated in some fashion) effects (let's say something like the poison from cinderbane gloves). Task armour in general and the tome of Um in detail pass this significantly. As said for the tome it will only get worse the second it can be upgraded to hard and elite tiers.

In general the tooltips we already have ingame do a great job when it comes to showing what an item is capable of without forcing players to check out the wiki (or other third party sources) at all times. It isn't insanely competent in displaying that information though. For instance I do think they should display all style bonuses literally as is, rather than listing 4 (and potentially even more, since this can is now open) individual entries with the same value. And yeah multiple passive effects aren't super elegant when they are sentence after sentence, rather than paragraphs (like they are in the task UI).

I think considering the new ability tooltips for necromancy, which currently are available in a beta for the old combat styles, it certainly is clear to them how important good tooltips are and I do hope they'll take their time to re-design them once more. As for missing information we are actually fairly good by now. As for items entirely lacking them - you certainly still can find missing things every now and then, but new things have them by default and they're adding them to old things gradually - the salve amulet only received one when they revamped and clarified a lot of the lower levelled slayer experience earlier this year.

So it comes to an end after eight years and a half, 140 posts and 2125 bumps.

While tooltips nowadays still are not perfect (and especially not complete), they're in so much better shape than back in the day and I do think this thread fulfilled its purpose - with necromancy the latest Jagex has fully shown they've understood the importance of good tooltips - and they delivered for both abilities as well as new equipment.

What is left to do is bringing the necromancy styled tooltips to the old combat styles (right now in beta), add missing tooltips for passive and set effects to older items and refine certain rather clumsy things. I do trust them they'll do more of those things in the future albeit it certainly is unclear if all of them will happen. And please get rid of those pseudo-sets introduced with necromancy - they're not sets after all.
