I don’t think so. As far as I’m aware, that was the one time in Runescape history where it was possible to artificially inflate the price of a low-demand item to ridiculous levels and then sell the entire stock for cash (by combining the high street-price items).
You’d stock up on an item, then buy it out at max over the course of a few weeks or months. While that was ticking away in the background, you’d trade in W2 to build up your stock of phats etc.
Towards the end of the trade limit period, some players started buying ready-made buyouts from other merchants. This required a lot of trust, so I don’t think many of these trades actually took place.
In the example I mentioned in my previous post, I took an item and inflated the price x7.5. I then traded the entire stock to another merchant who paid cash, plus gave me items with a street price.
“Price manipulation” has a bad rep these days because it generally means scamming, but back then we did buyouts to create currency with which to trade rares.
p.s. I sold my phats and then quit for a few years, so now I’m a pauper!
