RE the discussion about whether it was ever easy to get rares, I'd say it was during the days of restricted trade, for those that mastered junk trading. Right before they removed the limits I was making ~200m/day logging in for ~3hrs. I'd guess phats were somewhere around 1000-2000m street price at the time, GE price ~500m.

So say 5-30 hours for a phat, depending on how you calculate it. I'm sure others were making more...

e.g. I just looked back at my screenshots and found a conversation with a guy I sold a buyout to (yea, that was a thing) and he was on track to make ~130b over the next few months. That was on the 10th Dec 2010 ... 11 days later Jagex announced the poll to re-introduce free trade.

How a super genius plays a video game: “I bought out an item to make a phat.” Lol.

The rest of us just traded what we found on the ground after pvm.
I cannot for the life of me manage to catch Covid. Perhaps it's because I didn't get vaxxed? The travails of those lacking immunity. :(

Im curious if in this time and age its still possible to obtain a phat in such manner by buying up items. i know it was possible back when phats were like 7-14b but idk about now trusting certain pc lists or prices of items or websites that dont belong to jagex will get you into trouble notice: external websites and trades are your responsibility, dont get fooled!.

I don’t think so. As far as I’m aware, that was the one time in Runescape history where it was possible to artificially inflate the price of a low-demand item to ridiculous levels and then sell the entire stock for cash (by combining the high street-price items).

You’d stock up on an item, then buy it out at max over the course of a few weeks or months. While that was ticking away in the background, you’d trade in W2 to build up your stock of phats etc.

Towards the end of the trade limit period, some players started buying ready-made buyouts from other merchants. This required a lot of trust, so I don’t think many of these trades actually took place.

In the example I mentioned in my previous post, I took an item and inflated the price x7.5. I then traded the entire stock to another merchant who paid cash, plus gave me items with a street price.

“Price manipulation” has a bad rep these days because it generally means scamming, but back then we did buyouts to create currency with which to trade rares.

p.s. I sold my phats and then quit for a few years, so now I’m a pauper!

Raphtalia seems to be thinking of token buy outs. So, a person might have 200 eggo pets which drives up price, then sells them all at higher price, easiest with high demand tokens like walks.

One area I lost big on was 1k hot sand walk tokens which fell from 30m each to 2.5m each. They might have peaked at 40m or so.

Doesnt have to be specificly tokens but trading items for items instead of cash for items with in mind the max shard which is like 53-54b making it hard to buy something above it without an item involved. like for example 9 santa hats for 1 black santa hat etc.

Tranquilty and GuWanna literally calling out each other in Disc thread. There is a Danish saying "Tyv tror hver mand stjæler" which is so fitting and I love it. Rank #56 Overall. 8000/1****? Hard caskets stacked. 7000/8****? Elite caskets stacked.
31/37 boss logs completed - Ultimate Slayer achieved
Would you trust a Price-checking service that has bots running in W2 advertising themselves constantly? I wouldn't!
