When Osborne still was around there would have been absolutely no chance for it to be an elite skill, since those are basically too inacessible.

With him gone, it may be fair game again, but I personally think it's still rather unlikely, since the skill seems to be interwoven with the new quest line at a fairly early point - which also speaks against being an elite skill for the same reasons. Most likely a support skill, maybeish a combat one if they're very daring.

I doubt if it was Mod Osborne or whoever who would the new skill likelier to be elite or not, as the general focus of not Jagex, but the game industry is on new players and Fresh Start servers. There is almost 100% stupid for Jagex to lock out new players, especially when their $12.5 a month subscription is not even worth it.

Anyway FYI, back in September, Jagex told us the new skill has been in development for months. So the design work was done in early 2022, if not last year, when Mod Osborne was still with Jagex.

It has to be a elite skill, it makes sense for it too. If people can't be bothered to work towards goals runescape isn't for them in the long run.

Please tell us why didn't we have elite skills in RSC and RS2 then.

they said on stream it wont require any requirements except a miniquest. so that makes me assume it wont be an elite skill.

Right! They actually told us they didn't think of elite skills since Invention.

Perhaps more importantly, game designers and developers don't actually decide new content is "elite" or not. Marketing, not the likes of Mod Osborne, actually dictates who the new content are designed for. For instance, developers once told us they didn't design Kerapac, but marketing wanted it because of great engagement numbers, hence we have Kerapac as an important part major content in recent years.

That said, it is not hard to see marketing is going for new and lapsed players and so the new skill must have low or no requirements, let alone being "elite".

Imagine necromancy requiring 80 in three skills to unlock then being a 150 cap skill, that would be utter bliss for me. I'm not even someone who rushes skills, I just enjoy that there's always something in the distance for me to obtain. You don;t even have to max skills in this game and reaching 80 in a skill isn't particularly hard these days.

I'd be happy if they just made hard servers and like here you go have 200m for cleaning a herb server, but unfortunately that wont ever happen.

RS3 doesn't make "hard" servers. They just want one server for all the players. No hard servers and no game mode. That's why they said the new skill has no requirements except just a miniquest.

We can still have the new skill at level 150 cap, but there is no point to require other skills at high levels to unlock it when RSC and RS2 worked well without even one elite skill.

Why shouldn't it be an elite skill? I mean, Necromancy...

Sounds like it'd be quite involved.

It's involved early into the new storyline (I'll assume it will start again at 50something), so it's extremely unfeasible to assume players will have multiple level 80 skills available.

Interesting. I was wondering the same thing. It could be a restoration of a skill that was in Classic. Didn't Classic have some weird prayer skill? It eventually just merged with another skill. It was just like the first year of the game.

Evil and Good magics basically were something comparable to our spellbooks nowadays (just as skills, unlocking spells independently from one another), which both had combat and utility spells and buffs (which then evolved into prayers).

RSC also had had proposed some kind of summoning system (it never came to be and wasn't tackled by RS2 later), which is more comparable to thralls in OS (perfectly possible they just finished that proposal) than our actual summoning - you create a creature for a short time via some spell, which assists you with fighting.
small correction, divination and beyond are the RS3 skills, runecrafting to dungeoneering are the RS2 skills. so summoning WAS tackled by RS2.

we did have quests locking three skills. never complete druid ritual, rune mysteries, or wolf whistle and you never get to train herb, rc, or summoning.
