Interesting. I was wondering the same thing. It could be a restoration of a skill that was in Classic. Didn't Classic have some weird prayer skill? It eventually just merged with another skill. It was just like the first year of the game.

Why shouldn't it be an elite skill? I mean, Necromancy...

Sounds like it'd be quite involved.

It's involved early into the new storyline (I'll assume it will start again at 50something), so it's extremely unfeasible to assume players will have multiple level 80 skills available.

Evil and Good magics basically were something comparable to our spellbooks nowadays (just as skills, unlocking spells independently from one another), which both had combat and utility spells and buffs (which then evolved into prayers).

RSC also had had proposed some kind of summoning system (it never came to be and wasn't tackled by RS2 later), which is more comparable to thralls in OS (perfectly possible they just finished that proposal) than our actual summoning - you create a creature for a short time via some spell, which assists you with fighting.

So it was magic. I thought it was prayer. But we do have basically separate prayer books too. Not sure I would call curses evil though. Just something that was created by Zeros. As are the Ancient spells. But I thought it was a form of prayers in Classic. But that was so long ago. Things were kind of fuzzy. You know actually OSRS has the additional spell book which is basically like Necromancy. You summon spirits to get prayer experience. Wondering if it would be a combination of Prayer, Mage and Summoning. Yes, it really doesn't have to be an elite skill to combine with other skills. Slayer was not an elite skill and it basically uses combat. Well mainly uses combat.

They also had had two prayer skills - evil and good prayers, but they basically were dysfunctional (you were able to gain xp, but the skills haven't unlocked anything), so they got removed without further notice, while the buffs of the two magic skills got included into what we nowadays know as prayer, while everything else got included what we nowadays know as magic. The OS necromancy spellbooks regarding those thralls sound extremely close to what the original vision of summoning was - https://classic.runescape.wiki/w/Summoning_spells - obviously we already got the animal and demon side in RS3, while OS has that concept basically as is for the undead. This kind of short termed summoning spell could actually work in tandem with our current summoning.

Otherwise using multiple skills for a piece of content isn't even that unusual - squishing fruit for primal mush for instance both needs herblore and cooking levels and grants xp in both skills. A more classical example is equipment, that historically required levels in two (or partially even three - pernix armour needed ranged, defence and constitution pre eoc for instance) skills at once. But obviously never as heavily involved as in invention.

As Jagex told us we with be "communing the deceased" with the new skill, it won't be anything remotely elite as anybody can start communing with the deceased just by getting the most novice Amulet of Ghostspeak with hardly any requirement.
