This post is a review of Murder on the Border's revelations, and as such, does contain spoilers for the quest. This quest is a whodunnit mystery themed quest, so reading beyond this sentence will almost certainly damage the content's enjoyment. You have been warned.

---

Unfortunately, it truly was a Dunnet, who done it. However, I did really appreciate our killer's relationship with Queen Ellamaria preceding that of her service to the crown -and- involving the Blue Moon Inn (for those of us that have completed Garden of Tranquility a long time ago and are brushed up a bit on the Queen's now somewhat confusing past.)

I'm actually quite the fan of a little bit of "scale theory" being put into place here involving places like Lumford or buildings such as Edgeville Castle. It's not a secret that the world isn't as big as the T.S. Church novels about the game make it seem (which were also referenced in this quest, for those of us nerds that like to read supporting material outside of the internet!

I was very concerned that Rodney was going to end up being your stereotypical video game LGBTQ+ villain that the industry leans too heavily on - and that would have felt like a huge setback for a game that has done remarkably well in being positively representative of the group as a whole. Instead, Rodney joins our merry band on the Fort staff with a deep history that is all set up to be a red herring, and it's genuinely funny.

Iris is a wonderful "is she dumb or is she really smart and pretending to be dumb" character who also gets enough proof of being a socialite for it to matter in the quest. Would love to see her be an informant in the future.

Alba was a very good addition to the cast and was someone I thought was the killer for a bit - she had very good reason to be in my opinion.

Finally, the secret improvement. King Roald. My favorite part of this quest was his love for Ellamaria. It's much more believable than ever.

The following is a presumption of future events in the Fort Forinthry questline from a lore perspective. Admittedly, I was hoping for a little bit more on this front, but it wasn't "lacking" so much as it was a "subtle" escalation of events. Because our murderer was involved, I'll also be spoiler-warning this blurb as well.

---

Two things that lean on our Fort's purpose were reinforced with this quest. The Zamorakians outside of the north gate are certainly as active as we are as tensions rise, and the mysterious "Z" who convinced Bianca to infiltrate our fortress probably does have a bit of a personal history with the area around Varrock.

My theory, is that this particular questline has a whole lot to do with a Mahjarrat that was just put in his place by a human-hybrid and thwarted in the area a couple of times now. His name is Zemouregal, and this time it won't be an alternate reality where we finally put the fiend down. His time is running short....Maybe - we'll get there.

Rationale for this. Three points.

> The Misthalinian royalty is Zemouregal's traditional enemy.

> Zemouregal starts with "Z".

> If there's one thing Zemouregal is an expert at, it's a little something called "necromancy"... and I can't imagine why that would be important. If we don't somehow extract his secrets before finally ending his life, well... He will die, regardless. :)

Not even a spoiler, when we are told in the Succession quest the "Z"amorkian Mahjarrat are behind the Necromancy attacks on Varrock plot.

We already know about Zamoeregual's ambition of New Varrock in Dimension of Disasters. However, bear in mind, "Z"amoeregual is already defeated and sucked dried by Moia at the end of the the Succession quest.

Moia is the new leader of the "Z"amorakians.

I'm not here to deny that Moia removed power from Zemouregal, and the possibility that it was all of it is most certainly there. However, I'm pretty convinced that for this particular storyline, Zemouregal is our main villain, because I don't think there is a better fit for the "Z" alias in Murder on the Border than him.

> Moia could have chosen to kill him like she may have Bilrach, but she didn't, leaving him alive and able to pursue some of his personal conquests - namely, Varrock, which he's been pretty routinely involved with and even without significant Mahjarrat powers he could stand to gain from any political unrest there.

> Zamorak is either a mite too powerful for a simple letter, or a whole lot banished from Gielinor altogether to be behind the "Z" alias, and none of the other Zamorakians would fit this alias either.

> Fort Forinthry's questline, from its start, has been set firmly in Misthalin, and will likely end in the same manner even if it does involve some bigger players. They are probably saving a huge clash between Adrasteia and Moia for another storyline. Zemouregal on the other hand, would be a minor loss in a larger clash between the human race of Gielinor and all of Zamorak's remnants. However, he would be a larger foe in a smaller storyline focused on territory that is relevant to him.

> Necromancy is Zemouregal's specialty - and if the player is to be learning how to do that, and it's linkable to the Fort storyline, there's certainly motive for Zemouregal to teach us, given that Moia had disgraced and possibly disarmed him in Succession. Right now though, we've just banished his god and put into motion the events that earned him the indignity in the first place. We'll have to mend fences with Zemouregal - or bring him to his knees again - first.

Zemouregal may be an undead or a living dead already if it was Xau-Tak's strange power Moia used on him and Bilrach at the end of Succession.

When we saw Lucien in the 2018 Halloween event again after he was killed at the Ritual of the Mahjarrat, we could see any dead/undead/living dead Mahjarrat or just illusions of them again, but they no longer have their own thoughts.

Not just Zemouregal, Lucien was also a necromancer. So was Sliske who obviously raised the Barrow brothers and sister as well as Nomad. We are going to see Mahjarrat necromancers more than likely in the following stories, but there is no reason to think it has to be Zemouregal only.

Sure, Dino, my friend, if we were just talking about NPCs who could be relevant to Necromancy alone.... but specifically regarding the plot of the Fort Forinthry quest series?

This quest series focuses on the Misthalinian nobility, including the player and their staff at Fort Forinthry, and still yet unknown Zamorakian forces that located north of the Fort that are certainly trying to cause trouble. in Murder on the Border, we read a note from the mysterious "Z", and through this quest along with the series' beginning, we've dealt with nobody but our staff and the nobility in the area. Zemouregal is the only Mahjarrat that has spent a significant amount of time trying to conquer Varrock (...so much so in fact that there's a quest that lets us do previous quests again in a dimension where he is triumphant in doing so!)

The reason Fort Forinthry's lore is important in regards to Necromancy is because the Fort is somehow involved with the skill in some way. Here's a possible scenario.

> Zemouregal ends up being the mysterious "Z" from the letter, and we foil his plans to topple our fortress and once again wreak havoc upon Misthalin, this time getting the opportunity to fight him in the correct dimension. Before we slay him, he offers to become a part of our Fort staff, watching over...let's say the area where we administer deathcare to fallen soldiers or something (a Graveyard.)... and the Fort provides little bonuses to the cadavers we bring back to life.

> I -do- think Zemouregal meets his end in this hypothetical finale quest, but not by our own hand. Possibly, by Moia's. It's possible that Zemouregal tries to sell her out in an effort to keep his life or something like that, and she would have just happened to be watching.

> Alas! The player is able to raise Zemouregal back from the dead, so that he can keep up his end of the bargain... possibly through some of his teachings, and that's how the fort aids in Necromancy.

Talking about Necromancy, especially in Misthalin, Lucien was actually more relevant than anybody else.

Remember Arrav and his shield? Lucien was the necromancer who was tied to this pivotal lore of necromancy well before we knew of other Mahjarrat.

It is unknown how Lucien gained the ability to raise undead armies though. Sure, we knew of Zemouregal later, but also no relevance how he became a necromancer well after the stories of Lucien and Arrav.

We have already seen Lucien, or something looked like Lucien, reappearing from apparent death in Misthain with reference to the Black Stone. I won't be surprised to see Zemouregal again later too, but I am pretty sure Zemouregal will not be the only NPC involved in Necromancy and the Misthalin stories.

Original message details are unavailable.
arrav is tied to zemouregal not lucien lol

"In his search for the artefacts and other objects that might harness enough power for
Lucien
to rise above the others of his kin,
he attempted to claim the Shield of Arrav,
and successfully acquired both the Staff of Armadyl and the Stone of Jas."

https://runescape.wiki/w/Lucien

The
RS3
Wiki doesn't seem to agree with you lol

Hint Hint... Lucien was a necromancer since the 2nd Age, while we only get to know the late comer Zemouregal as a necromancer thousands of years later.
