January 4 - January 31, from the Wiki:

Earn pirate keys for every hour of gameplay and for logging in and spend them for prizes. Maximum of 12 pirate keys to be earned each week in total.

Some of the potential rewards include:

100M GP
Uncharted Island Map (RED)
Two-Trait Animal Crate (Unchecked)
Fixate Charge Token (5)
Dragon Mattock
Clue Scrolls, seeds, charms, etc.

I'm gonna go ahead and predict I will win nothing of value. :P

Not 'nothing' of value, nothing of much value :-P - and I bet I'm right there with you with getting nothing of much value as well...
Things may be looking down now, but I see a light at the end of the tunnel;
Do you think I should get off the tracks?

TBH I can't figure out the purpose of this event. Looking at the schedule on the wiki, the wrapping paper event runs til January 15. Yak continues through the month.

The following week is an event that lets you talk to an NPC for a daily 1 time triple drop.

AKA people have lots of deathtouched darts and nothing to dart with. I wonder which monsters will be killed most frequently? There are like 2 options?

That coincides with a promised end to Fresh Start Worlds, and obviously that is a clue to this puzzle.

Putting all that together, it seems the updates aren't made for the existing Runescape players. It's just another way for the Fresh Start Worlds to come crashing into sudden existence and keep them engaged.

The rest of us should be ready for a break by then, what with all the cosmetic food items and wrapping paper to dispose of.

Joining in as well - seeing the loot, it at least seems better, than just a shitload of xp thingies. But yeah - I'm so not going to get the big things.

I was surprised to discover this event was included in the update post from December 12. I definitely read that post at the time, and definitely forgot all about it.

Aside from being a small added thanks to all you 'Scapers for you dedication, this event is also a test for us to see how we can reward your time more flexibly. We'll be keen to hear your thoughts as we go!

So I guess it is a new daily that would be added to the previous existing dailies and that would be a solution to the daily problem.

If it was meant to be progress, wouldn't that require the other dailies to be removed? Which would be a nerf. Taking away the very purpose of the daily and making it another lottery.

TBH that is probably a good thing. I am guessing there will be a good chance to win the 100m prize, to gain support for this system.

Even though cries about the economy will surely take place, that entire situation is in question. The game needs more rewards in the 100M range. So 'newer' players can actually advance in the game.

Also, about quest related dailies or anything with a requirement, you could simply have them unlock further rewards in this system.

Jagex seems to think that if you Fill in the month of no updates with Temp events, than you will make sure players are logging in.

For me personally, it made me play less RS than I would have if they just kept to the Yak track. its an packed month of Temp events and experiments.
Time to follow an trail of Treasure.

This month's featured update is Death Cost Reduction. We are also going to have the Raptor Rampage event

I guess I can't complain too much about that event in general. It doesn't promote unhealthy behaviour, it doesn't reward anything you couldn't get afterwards and it really just happens alongside normal gameplay.

In this case even really 'normal gameplay' for once, it doesn't force to skill once every 3 minutes - and even specific 'skilling', since seeing the forums enough things are bugged - and not even all of them incredibly niche. I genuinely hope, that this could be used to replace existing skill/kill systems to be fair.
