ive just recently come back from a rather long break so im not familiar with all the new stuff and allowed 3rd party options so to me this situation is rather confounding. for the last 30 minutes ive been engaged in an undercutting war with someone else on the GE. whats odd is no matter how much i lower my prices within a few minutes this person lists for 1 gold less than me without ever buying one of mine for a price check. if i drop my price 5 g somehow hes right below me a minute or two later, if i drop it 50 the same thing. hell in the time its taken me to type to this point ive had to stop and lower my prices twice.

so whats going on here? there some jagex approved way to see how many of an item are listed at what price without buying one to price check? or am i dealing with some kind of annoying bot or something here?

If you can stand at GE for a period of time trying to make some gp trading, others can too.

Although the GE tax has curbed merching activities a bit, there are still gp to make by observing trade patterns of items and due diligence.

Bots can't see GE data, as it resides on the Jagex back end.

im not shocked someone else is trying to move their stuff quickly as well, what im confused about is how the hell they know what im listing mine at without buying any to price check. how do they know i dropped my price exactly 43gp or exactly 51gp etc etc. i set a buy order for 1 gp less than my sell and everytime im getting undercut its by that exact 1 gp. so somehow someone is seeing that backend data... even when i wait for 5+min between undercuts somehow within a minute or two im undercut again...

If such a software program did exist, it would be against the rules as it would clearly give them an advantage in trading on the GE.

With that being said, there may be other strategies that players use to test item prices in the GE. Maybe they're setting lower prices and quickly building up, seeing how frequently the item sells. It's possible other traders have the item in for a price similar to yours, and someone testing the price is actually purchasing their item first over yours.

There are a number of unknowns that could be contributing to this phenomenon.

yeah jeremy this is literally a undercutting war in the style of WoW auctions. with the limited blind nature of the GE it should be impossible for someone to precisely undercut me regardless of the amount i undercut.

for example just now i purchased a super defense (4) pot to price check at 31,000. i listed mine for sale at 30,999, and put in a buy order at 30,998. a minute later my buy order goes through so i lower my sell order to 30,997 and place a buy order for 30,996. this cycle repeats 2 more times with me never selling a single one to someone price checking, but then out of frustration i say fuck it and lower my price to 30,849 just to rule out someone just dropping their price every few minutes, with the buy order at 30,848 and a minute or two later the buy order gets tagged. its worth noting that NONE of the buys had any return, its always EXACTLY 1 gp under me with NO PRICE CHECKS DONE.

if you dont believe me try it yourself with clean kwuarm, clean marrentill, super defense pots, or any herb/pot that the real buy price is above the ge price.

I'm confused. Is this complaining about things not instaselling or something?

It just sounds like there's not a lot of people using the g.e. so it takes a while for trades to complete. It also means that you have to go lower and lower to instasell.

more bitching that im stuck forking out money for price checks while someone is able to price check me without buying anything. was hoping it was just something new i was unaware of but if whats been said is accurate and theres no legit way to see the current actual listed prices, not what the ge says its worth, then it means everytime i get underbid im paying gp to someone whos exploiting somehow which is infuriating.

Mat - I'm not disagreeing; I'm curious. How do you verify that the cutter is exactly 1gp below you and not much lower? Multiple buy offers?

For example, if you are trying to sell at 30,001, then offer to buy at 30,000... maybe someone is selling at 20,000? Just trying to understand how you know it's exactly 1gp below you and not some other lesser amount?
