Hello all hope everyone is having a good day,

I was looking at the RuneScape API earlier today and noticed the Player_count endpoint. But it did not seem to update at least not in the 15 minutes I monitored it. Does anyone know if this is by design or if i am incorrectly using the API.

https://www.runescape.com/player_count.js?varname=iPlayerCount&callback=jQuery000000000000000_0000000000&_=0

query for player count that I am using. Also why does the value change when "=0" does not equal 0 am I reading a different JavaScript attribute/DOM or are they using it to bypass caching and they are using the _ as the query parameter?

Wait, you mean the total amount of players? Not the amount of currently online players? What's the number?

I believe the total player counter is broken. Jagex said something about it at the 300M player event last year that in the run-up, the counter had been counting wrong for a while, crossing 300M a lot sooner. The counter then jumped to a more correct 'over 320M', and has stayed like that since.
I think they said they were gonna get into it, but seems that may have gotten shelved.

I don't think it is a matter of some API is "broken", it is whether Jagex wants to show the information.

One may assume the "RuneScape Accounts Created" counter is "broken", and it is "shelved", but the reality is apparently Jagex has released such information to the media outside their website:

"About Jagex

A leader in creating deep and engaging live games on PC and mobile, Jagex’s flagship MMORPG, RuneScape, has welcomed almost 350 million player accounts to its world and is a $ 1billion lifetime revenue franchise"

We are actually up to "almost 350 million player accounts" instead of "over 320 million". Obviously, internally Jagex knows about the "almost 350 million player accounts" so they can release it to the public media. It is not "broken" apparently, but Jagex just doesn't want to make it visible on their website for some reason.

I can understand that. If that is the case why have an API endpoint for it. The sole point of an API is to return data for use in a program hence API (application programming interface). I'm assuming the API as a whole has been shelved and is not meant for public use.

The tool was developed way back in the past, but Jagex just doesn't want it to be visible to the public now perhaps. It doesn't have to be broken or shelved. They can turn it back on any time if it is being turned off now or they may have better tool than that in the making once when they make it visible.
