Great guide. I too have tried to explain efficiency and opportunity cost to many players.

I tried to scan the thread but sadly didn't read each post so I don't know if this concept has been discussed. Sorry if this is a repost.

One thing that factored into my efficiency equation was "time commitment".

"Percent Time Utilization" can be one of the most important factors in the efficiency equations. The concept of time utilization can make guild fishing a better money maker than double nats or even tormented demons.

Before you call me a loon, read on...

"Percent Time Utilization" is the amount of time you actually spend interacting with runescape.

An example, barbarian fishing takes a lot of interaction where as fishing at the fishing guild doesn't. I can therefore do other things while fishing at the guild. Don't tell my boss this but I have multiple computers at work. One of them, the one that can't be seen as someone walks in the door, is my runescape computer. During the day I do those things that I can monitor by sound and that require infrequent clicks, such as guild fishing.

As an example, using complete guesses for values, if I only need to spend 10 seconds out of every minute at guild fishing and the other 50 seconds working vs full attention to barbarian fishing. Guild fishing generates 6 times as much profit as much you would otherwise think.

Does that mean it's better than barbarian fishing? In terms of raw numbers I don't know, probably not.

But more importantly the percent time utilization for guild fishing is low enough that I can do it while doing my real life job, something I can't do with runecrafting. Therefore guild fishing is infinitely more profitable than even double nats or tormented demons.

Note: I am still probably a loon it's just that this post doesn't prove it. ;-)

Excellent guide, the rule that you have mentioned about how using slayer is very efficient to train combat skills is amazing, and I followed it even before reading this. You also train your combat skills quicker on slayer if you are using either a black mask, focus sight, and hexcrest.

Now, I am not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, I have scanned through, but not completely read all posts, but on page 5, you mentioned in that list that firemaking is not a profitable skill, but currently, burning even up to maple logs, you can make a 200+ gp profit per log by picking up the ashes. This will slow down your exp/hour slightly, as you might only be able to burn 900 logs per hour, instead of 1,000.

So, let's say you are using maple logs, burning 900 per hour and picking up the ashes will lead to 121.5k exp/hour, and at 200 gp profit, its profit is about 180k per hour. Whereas burning 1,000 logs per hour is 135k exp/hour. So, in terms of efficiency, wouldn't picking up the ashes be much more efficient?

Also, these numbers were pure estimates and used as examples for what I'm trying to explain.

Again, though, excellent guide, and I hope everyone has a chance to read it. :)

Jon H has this as the Spotlighted Thread on the January Community Newsletter, so I thought I'd come say grats and well done on a fantastic guide.

I'm not much an "efficiency" person myself, but I appreciate your aim to look beyond the specific methods to see the, as you said, "point of the guide."

Some good tips you have there!

I have been playing this game on and off for a long time, but never really thought of this stuff this way.

I for one thank you for taking the time to write this guide.

I guess you can teach a "old dog" new tricks, lol.

Thanks guys :) .

The point raised about "time commitment" could have some relevance if you must afk something, obviously. Even if it's better to be barbarian fishing than fishing monkfish in purely Runescape terms, it doesn't take much to see that monkfishing is better than having to log out entirely to focus on something in real life!

And really? I wasn't aware this thread was listing on a community newsletter. I'll check that out =D

Dear Sports441995,

Let me add my thanks to you for your guide. I read it after seeing it in the newsletter and have been applying your principles since and it has already made a big difference in my gameplay. I do have one question.

One response, by Learns, to the thread was this:
“1.get 99 agility to help run use shortcuts on skills and areas
“2. get 99 hunter to make money for ur rs career 3.
“3.slay for 99 melee stats and use money from hunter to fund your armour, weps, other things
“4.get 92 fming and get inferno adze and get 99 wcing and thru wcing you will get 99 fming
“5.get the idea lol”

I’ve been looking for a more, step-by-step guide as to the order in which skills should be trained. For example, agility could be trained before runecrafting and slayer before constitution, but, what about a more comprehensive list? Given the current game, in which order would you suggest training the 25 skills? I see some obvious key ideas: money-makers before money-takers; slayer before combat; and gathering skill before artisan, etc.

Thanks in advance.
