When you try to craft jewelry:
1 - you need to click on the furnace (not a forge)
2 - then click on the gold bar in the first column of the furnace interface (it is ok if it says zero stored as long as you have the gold bar in your inventory).
Then the options for jewelry come up in the second column.

It was driving me crazy because that is not intuitive. The information is listed in previous columns but I thought it might be good to have the steps written out explicitly because I am sure I will forget how to do this.
