I have looked at some models of Gateway computers and they seem to have the numbers in those locations. If you want you can try to do some alt codes by converting them through the laptop portion of the guide.
If this doesn't help you then please post the model number of your computer. That way I will be able to view the exact keyboard that you have and help you out.

The way you have for laptops doesn't even work for my IBM. I do ALT codes by holding the Fn key and then pressing number lock (ussually noted as NmLk or NumLock and is located on the scroll lock in blue on my computer). I then press ALT and press the numbers noted under the regular keys (the little blue numbers).
My IBM is pretty old and maybe thats the problem but then again Ibms may be different.
