Did you know that the liver has a dual blood supply. 70-80% via the hepatic portal vein and 20-30% via the hepatic artery. Contrary to many beliefs that veins don't supply organs, in this case, the portal vein drains away from the gastro-intestinal tract bringing nutrient-rich blood towards the liver to be 'cleaned'. The oxygen supply to the liver comes primarily from the hepatic artery, which is a direct branch off the caudal (inferior) aorta.
