The dark orange sun kissed the horizon as the day came to a close. Corporal Francis of the city guard was on duty, patrolling the western section of the Sophanem. His young, innocent face remained emotionless whilst he strolled up and down his post--eyes ever-fixed on the gate of Menaphos across the bridge that connected the two cities. The gate was barricaded by the Menaphites, who were as reclusive as the elves of old.

Francis could only imagine what laid beyond that gate. There was many a rumor being circulated that Menaphos was planning something--something big. There was much commotion that could be heard beyond the gate. Every time Francis' pitter-pattering feet brought him to the foot of the bridge, he could hear all kinds of sounds coming from beyond that gate. With each new passing, his face lit up more and more.

What could they possibly be doing this late in the day, he thought to himself.

After half-an-hour, the sun was completely set and Sophanem grew still, as its inhabitants retired for the evening. Still, the clamoring from across the bridge could be heard by Francis. His mind pondered all of the different possibilities of what those sounds could be as he paced up and down his post, newly-lit lantern in hand.

"One small peak won't hurt," he whispered to himself, "I'll return to my route right after... I have to know what is going on."

The corporal about-faced, and made his way slyly to the bridge, keeping his lantern and body low. Slowly, he tip-toed across the bridge to the gate of Menaphos. Being this close, he heard the sounds more clearly.

*clank* *clank* *clank*

This was the sound of a hammer beating another piece of metal. But it wasn't like an armor's smith, no. It was if something was being chiseled into a block of metal. Eager to find out what lay beyond, Francis peaked through the gate and was astonished at what he saw.

The first thing he saw was what appeared to be a legion of warriors. All were clad in cloth armor, and wielding whips as their primary weapon. They surrounded something Francis couldn't see.

*clank* *clank*

The clanking noise was coming from that which the group surrounded and seemed only to grow louder with each passing hit.

*CLANK* *CLANK* *CLANK*

Francis squinted as he made out the sight of a hammer being raised over and over in accordance with the pauses between clanks. After two final hits, the group roared in a harmonious but still powerful voice. They threw their hands up in celebration... but what were they celebrating?

Between the arms of a few soldiers, Francis was able to get a peak of what was being worked on. His eyes widened and his mouth gaped open. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.

In a hushed voice he said, "Menaphites... what have you done? How did you acquire the Ankh of ..."

At that moment, a dagger was flung through the opening Francis was peering through. The dagger spun quickly and its quick speed was halted only by the eye-socket of Francis' left eye. Francis fell to the floor, clutching his wounded eye. Sadly, the knife reached deeper than his mere eye, seeming to pierce the corporal's frontal lobe. On the ground, he was losing blood and began to lose consciousness. He looked past the gate, barely holding on... he blinked. When his eyes opened, he saw it. The Ankh was chiseled with the symbols of The Silver Vigil, the revolutionary group that had seized unofficial control over Sophanem. Apparently, they had spread their influence across the river to Menaphos as well. Francis' eyes closed for the last time, and so the secret of this union of The Vigil and the Menaphosi died with him.

On the Island of Goshima the sound of a bell tolling could be heard, daily, and without fault. The origin of the noise came from within the fortified settlement there. The settlement, which was more truthfully a city, had a well-known rule that disallowed all new-comers to enter in. The city's walls were so high, that besides the sound of a bell, the only remaining hint of the interior of the city was the imposing, black walls itself. And therefore the happenings of the city on Goshima were open to speculation.

To some of those that were barred entry into the walled city, the clangorous sound would be meaningless, annoying, or, if heard constantly enough, would be maddening indeed. Others who did hear it enough tried to make sense of it.

Some would believe that a rung bell once now wards off the dark spirits of yesterday (in fact a common problem on the island is that it houses a dark resident there whom is as unwanted as he is menacing).

Some would believe that the bell ringing was both and only a call to the inhabitants to wake up and to begin their day; a rather creative version of this theory mentions the cause being that the inhabitants were celebrating their isolated prosperity, escaping the eldritch lurking beyond their walls, and so needed something both to rouse them from their drunken slumber and also to call them to drink again.

And some would believe that the bell was a solemn matter of ceremony. That perhaps a long time ago the bell rung more than only once a day; that it had a purpose; that now it rings only once to remember the past; perhaps that ringing it once a day is all the remembrance the inhabitants could tolerate; perhaps that he who rings it can only muster enough energy to climb it's tower once in his day.

But...

To those within the solitude of the bailey; to those living within the walled city, and thus to those safe from that which haunts the island, the bell's sound announced the beginning of that day's trials.

She felt a string to her side, and knew that the claws had pierced her robes and skin. The pain was severe. “Why don’t we wear actual armor”, the poor Void Knight thought to herself. Another sting hit the same side, digging deeper into her flesh. The Knight let out a scream, as she dropped to one knee. Tears were welling up in her eyes, as she dropped her head and whispered “why me Guthix?”. Despite her pain, the Void Knight was holding onto her mace, turning her knuckles white. *
GRRRGR
* The Knight looked up and stared into the gaping abyss that formed the
shifter’s
mouth. As the
shifter
lifted its claw, the Void Knight closed her eyes, a warm tear rolling down her cheek. She let out what she thought was a final sob…
BUT
...The sound of the sob was overrun by something that sounded like metal hitting against each other. The Knight opened her eyes and looked up, and saw that the claw from the
shifter
had been stopped by a blade. She turned her head, staring into the face of a young human, with dark hair. Next to him was a Fremennik, who lifted his staff and arm into the air. The
shifter
turned into block of ice, and seconds later the block had shattered into a thousand pieces. “
Xul! Alphachan!
We need you down here!” She could see elves down at the western gate, one of the elves yelling at the two humans standing next to her. “We’re coming
Wenu
!”, the young human named
Alphachan
replied. He turned and gave her a short-smile, before turning and running towards the gate. The Void Knight felt an unusual rush of energy, her greens eyes wet from tears of relief, as she stood up and yelled “
The Western portal shield is down!

Ok good luck
