A Restless Night

A scream in the night woke Cain up. Not that he had gotten much restful sleep. He rubbed his eyes, and stared out from the safety of his quarters into the streets of Sophanem.

He knew what the screams were about. It was only a matter of time before the barricades that they tried to raise failed. Cain had spent many nights trying to think of some sort of a plan…not just to deal with the undead, but also to take people out of harm’s way.

He sighed, grabbed his scepter, and walked out into the night. As he stepped outside, his scepter shined with the strange eerie moonlight. A sad smile formed on his face as he reflected on his thoughts.

The people who used to call this place home gave me this. They defended Sophanem with everything they could. And now, here I am, wielding the same weapon, and trying to do the same thing.

Fate is odd.

The Vizier’s Plan

Cain headed to the docks of Menaphos with some sea charts in hand. He was determined that his plan would work. And even if it fails miserably, he thought, the people of Sophanem will be out of harm’s way, and maybe only…half the city will be destroyed?

He approached several ship captains, who he had asked to meet with him.

“The plan is simple. The stuffy big wigs in Menaphos don’t want to let the people of Sophanem through the gates, because some of them have plague. So you will sail to the edge of Sophanem, pick up anyone with plague, and head to the nearest of these…charted…isles.” Cain pointed some out on the map.

“But what about us? Won’t we catch it?” one of the captains objected.

Cain sighed. “Keep them below deck, or in a large holding area. Don’t make contact with them, and you’ll be fine. When you drop them off at the island, you may leave. When this issue is dealt with, we will return for them.”

“They won’t be safe,” another Eastern captain chimed in. “The Skull pirates might attack them.”

“And what, risk catching plague?” Cain interjected, and grinned.

The Captains looked at each other and nodded. They headed to their respective ships, and the evacuation began. Those with plague banded together and boarded the ships.

Cain headed back to his quarters, where he began to write several letters.

Letters from Cain

To our great, esteemed, all powerful, you know the rest, Pharaoh Dayan Itsu,

The plagued people are gone now. Please convince your guards to open the damn gates and let the people through to the safety of Menaphos.

Your Friend,

Cain

To Rizenel, Khan of Cyclosis and The Islands that Were Once Turtles*,

There was once a time where you (jokingly? No idea) threatened to shoot me out of a cannon.

Do you actually have this cannon? Or multiple cannons? We will need them in the defense of Sophanem.

If so, please bring said cannons to Sophanem at your earliest convenience. You may also come, if you would enjoy the opportunity to shoot mummies with cannons.

Kind regards,

Cain

*If they were once turtles, what are they now? Just Islands?

Ridley,

I know that I was dismissive of you in our last meeting. I am sorry for this.

I know that we often do not see eye to eye, and our goals rarely overlap.

However, there is something that I need your help with, and I think it is a task that someone with your…talents may even find enjoyable.

If you are interested in turning the city of Sophanem into the biggest death trap that the world has ever known, please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Also…is it a death trap if it only kills the undead?

Kind regards,

Cain

Dear Yami Eternal, Praefectus Praetorio of Zaros,

I don't believe that we have had the pleasure of meeting. I'd like to fix this poor situation by sending you an invitation to the wonderful city of Sophanem.

...Alright, but really, we need help. I'm sure that since you live in a pyramid, you've noticed that the undead are going completely nuts. If you could come (and maybe bring some friends? reinforcements? HELP) then that would be just great.

Kind regards,

Cain Dundragon

Dear Khan Dev of Aminishi,

It is time.

Your Friend,

Cain

To Cain Dundragon,

You Fool! Have you forgotten I have been banished from the Desert Region!?
Granted, I have gone anyways and the besides the point and I will gladly aid Sophanem in this fight!

However, I have sneaked back into the capital from time to time and for only a short while but my banishment still stands and if I stayed well... I require special permissions to enter for a long period of time.

Anyhow, I shall make my way there from Goshima. I have some ideas.

To Vizier Dundragon,

Rizenel finds your puns unamusing, as always. She is currently away satiating bloodlust phases she goes through. As for the cannons you are requesting, you had better ensure that no one other than yourself or the Pharaoh handles them. They are devices provided by the people of Varrock in her time there.

These cannons come in all sizes, from wall mounts to one she has dubbed as 'Pest Control', I don't know why...some of this arsenal needs to be retrieved as she cannot be bothered with your trifle matters, and has left Kraelyn and myself in charge while she is off traveling.

Sincerely, Rizenel's Left Hand,

Jamert Kaye

P.S. Sure, a person can fit in the cannon, but where the fun when you can stuff a dismembered ogre into it as well?

To Boot-Licker of the Pompous Pharaoh:

'Reinforcements,' you say? Sure, I can send 'HELP.' My newly acquired minions should be reaching your gates within a day.

To Vizier Dundragon,

The gates shall be opened, but please note that all gates will shut at sunset.
Also, the Head Guard is asking that you be located to Menaphos. I, however, believe you would prefer to be within Sophanem. That is up to you but further guards have been assigned to you. Also, we have received word from Khan Mimring of Goshima. We will be following a diagram that he sent us and will be drawn at the top of the Grand Pyramid. Let us hope that this helps.
Be safe.

Signed,
Pharaoh Dayan Itsu

Demons and Diagrams

It was early morning when the message from Goshima’s Mimring Ikol had arrived. Artemis was in the middle of eating a breakfast of deviled eggs, ham, and hot potato rounds. The Demonlord looked over the letter while taking another bite from the eggs. The included diagram was complex, much more complex that what Artemis was used to seeing. Artemis repackaged the letter and diagram and worked on finishing his breakfast and Haunted Roast coffee.

“High places of power…”
Artemis thought to himself. He thought for several minutes. He knew of one right away as it had been included within the letter itself, Castle Drakan. He eventually came up with two other locations of power that would beneficial to Mimring’s plan. The first was the newly rebuilt temple located on the River Salve, while the other location was deep within the Mort Myre Swamplands. This location was the Nature Spirit’s Grotto. He had heard of the place in times past but he was unsure of its exact location.

He turned to an impish follower.
“Call for The Blackout Brigade and Bellatrix Nightshade. I have need of them.”
He stopped to think then returned to speaking.
“I also wish for you to call several of the lesser demon guards as well. Nine should be enough for my purposes.”
The impling looked at the Demonlord.
“Ya boss, I does it for ya.”
And teleported away without another word.

Artemis made his way to a meeting room down the hall. After entering the room, he took his place at the head of the very large meeting table in the center. Soon, members of the called made their way into the meeting room. Some walked in, others teleported in leaving scorches on the floor in various places.

The meeting had begun.
“I have called you here today because I have a crucial task for each of you to perform. You are to take these diagrams…”
Artemis motions to an impling in the corner with a heaping stack of papers in its hands and the impling hands one to each being present.
“and draw them in select places. Make them as large as possible. We are dealing with zombies of unusual proportions, even by our standards.”
He continued.
“There will be three groups tasked with the preparations of the symbols. Each group will be assigned three guards to maintain and ensure that the work is not disrupted.”

A voice is heard from the back of the table.
“But why we gotta do dis boss? Seems like a waste of time ta me.”
It was Zarr, the youngest of the three Blackout Brigade brothers. Drusir, their leader and the eldest, popped him on the back of the head while Vasron said
“Don’t question the Demonlord you dolt.”
He shook his head at his brother’s insolence.
“Do continue sir.”

Artemis sighed, Zarr was lucky that he had patience for the demon. If it were not for his brothers, the demon would have been sent back to the infernal plane in pieces. He normally would not tolerate such a rude interruption.

Returning to the meeting at hand he started speaking again.
“Blackout Brigade, I wish for you to go to the top of the Zarosian Temple on the Salve River. Draw the symbols with care”
He looks toward Zarr and makes his words as clear as possible.
“…As one error could leave us open for an attack.”
The three demons nodded in unison.
