How is it going everyone? I am just stopping by for my yearly check in and it's good to see that the Kingdom of Varrock is still going strong. I see that some of you from 5+ years ago are still here while other great members have left. Congratulations for still being the greatest and oldest player owned kingdom!

Issue 1 - A Timely Return

Hear ye, hear ye, the old newspaper of old hath returneth unto thy yonder green and prosperous lands of Varrock. Back under the editorship of the esteemable Campo, it shall be a read worth reading.

“ok...time to go do jar” ~ King Lali

====

What a fantastic quote to start on, don’t you think? Oh yes, truly marvellous. It leads us straight into our first issue. The great KoVian scandal of 2016! That’s right, folks, the King himself wishes to do a citizen with his abs. It appears that the Monarchy’s methods of…’bonding’, with its citizens has truly been taken to a new level. I guess it’s a case of *what happens in the royal chambers, stays in the royal chambers”. I just hope the Queen doesn’t walk in on it else it may get a bit embarrassing.

So what would the King be doing, doing a citizen? Well, some questions are best left unanswered.

====

So what is the King doing when he’s not doing Jar? He’s inventing, as are numerous others. A scourge that has overtaken the minds of once sane KoVians has arrived and is truly a force to be reckoned with. Technological advancements a plenty with gizmos, junk, components, augmentations and all other technical machine industrial clever things are cropping up everywhere! Here’s to hoping Marii’s dungeon never sees any of these wacky inventions added to it.

Interviews are an important aspect of journalism, and as some kind of journalist I suppose it’s only fitting I ensure there’s an interview in every edition of this magnificent newspaper. Well, most, at least. So, who will it be? Who is the (un)lucky soul to face the questions? Well, let’s start off with one of our two monarchs, shall we? So, who better than our wondrous queen, Raine Izrail?

Without further ado, here’s the transcript:

Campo: Hello, Your Majesty, and thank you for taking the time to attend this interview. I trust you’re well?

Raine Izrail: That I am.

Campo: Marvellous. So, let’s just start off with a bit of background regarding yourself and the world of clans, and, of course, POCs. Prior to the Kingdom of Varrock, have you been in many clans? Also, what kind of positions have you held in those clans and did those clans have any particular specialities?

Warden Raine Izrail: Hmm...my clans prior to Kingdom of Varrock? Myself, I've been within Gielinor a while. About, twelve years, give or take a year. Started playing as a free-to-play worked my way around and ended up pay-to-play. As far as clan life goes, the very first group I joined was a Castle Wars group, pre-Friend's Chat and Clan system. We didn't have a name for ourselves, but we were just a bunch of friends that enjoyed Castle Wars and made our Home World 33, at the time. I made a lot of friends and we defended our Home World from other Castle War groups. When I left, it was a little after the head of group stopped playing and gave me some free items. Needless to say, I got scammed by people within the group which triggered my abrupt departure. Fast forward to a year and half, I joined a clan called Clan Tranquility. One of my friends from the Castle Wars group joined the clan and got me to join. There were two leaders initially when I joined, but I rose through the ranks and became one of four leaders/generals of the clan. After a while, the other three became inactive, and I had a hard time maintaining the clan with a lot of inactivity. It was to the point where there were only three people, not including myself, online daily. This clan had another lifespan of about a year and a half, before I closed it permanently, after my next mention.

Now, this is the only and first PoC I have been in prior to Kingdom of Varrock. A few people in KoV were people that I knew from back in the days when I was invited to a clan known as Kandarin Empire. The leader was Leo and a few people that are currently in KoV, I remember from back then as well. This was a different flavor clan/group from the previous two that I was in. It was my first taste of RuneScape Roleplay. I won't lie, the idea of Player Owned Cities baffled me back then, but I was willing try anything once.

This clan disappeared after inactivity as well, players from Clan Tranquility resurfaced and formed it again, then disappeared once more, I closed the clan permanently this time. Then Kandarin Empire came back after I had closed Clan Tranquility.

Now, Lost Souls...a minigame specialist clan. I am sure people are aware of what these types of clans do, we call sides and basically rig the games. Aside from that view, people within the clan had a different challenge, we had to make tactical calls on what to go for, otherwise the game would go awry. We had allies in the official world for Soul Wars, and despite games being tilted in such a manner, there were always rival groups/clans that would disrupt games in an effort to take over the home world. There were always spies for other clans or lower level groups that would leech off the main clan of that world, in particular. The unofficial worlds for Soul Wars were 137 and 2 and 36, at the time, before another world reshuffle. Well, regardless, this is the most eventful clan life I had before the last two clans I was/am involved in. After a few months, a new Soul Wars group emerged called the World Alliance and started absorbing our allies into their fold. We were going to join them, but the leader wanted us to kick one member because she did not like her. We weren't going to kick a loyal member just because she offended someone's ego. Come to think of it, I think this is how I developed most of my personality that is known today...

Well, back on track, because we refused to kick her the World Alliance decided to send our former allies to w2 to keep crashing us until we died off. Now, here's the funny thing, Lost Souls is a big group and we didn't have elite members. Everyone in the group was 130+ and even knew how to play and we could hold our own.

We split off from some of our defending players and the player that the World Alliance leader wanted us to kick did leave, but remained loyal to us. She formed her own group called The Ancients, a group of Mages and Rangers, 135+. Now, what we did was while we had some of our group on the home front defending our Home World, we went to the worlds of the other clans and crashed them. In Soul Wars, when a group has multiple losses, they start to lose their merit and people leave or join the stronger group. That was the goal of the World Alliance, and that was our goal as well. One could view it malicious, but the way I saw it, they did it first, and all I did was return the favor. Needless to say, we dispersed a good number under the World Alliance and took them on in their own world and beat them in a situated...best out of 3 wins. Now, this was around the time that the Clan Citadel system was initiated. Most of us left because we were using the Friend's Chat system and decided to go our separate ways.

Third Wing was a clan I founded, but short lived...We were a PvM/PvP group and grew in members quickly. We had about 300 members or so and managed to achieve tier 4 in our citadel, before I ended up closing the clan. Now, I had two co leaders that I had established prior to me leaving on a vacation for about two weeks, give or take. Everyone knew about my leave and these two that were to run the group in my absence had a rift and when I came back, the entire clan was down to three members.

This was also a lesson in itself. Now, we come to Lone Wolves, a Warring Clan. This is where I met Vaan and Shae who are members of the Kingdom of Varrock. When Clan Wars was a big thing, pre-eoc, I had fun. A lot of fun, and we would have massive wars on the weekends, but just go slap people around in the Clan Wars world during the week. Like other clans, I rose through the ranks and became one of the generals as the Archmage. 99 Magic and 99 Defense will do that. After learning some Warring tactics/protocol I got the hang of it and learning who would be the bigger threat. We also had to quickly figure out who was a tank to take the group off guard, since someone could be a threat as a DPSer, initially then switch to being a tank. Now, the downfall of this clan was the initial exodus when EoC came around.

Most people left because they did not want to bother with EoC and such. A little after, I needed a break and took a year's hiatus in 2013. I would log on periodically to do daily stuff. Now, fast forward to February of 2014. Vaan, one of the leaders/Generals, from Lone Wolves had joined Kingdom of Varrock. I asked him about the clan and later joined myself, bringing Yami Izrail and Sonica Star with me. So...here I am.

Campo: So judging from what you’ve said, it would be fair to say you have a fair deal of leadership experience in RuneScape. With that in mind, if you had to single out one particular quality above all others, what would you say is the single most important quality for a leader and why?

Raine Izrail: Hmm, a single quality in a leader? Competent. Leading, not just a clan, but anything in general, you need to understand that you are not going to be perfect and mistakes will be made. However, you also need to know what you are getting yourself into and how to handle situations, should they arise. On a personal basis, my top five qualities in good leadership are:
1. Honest
2. Foresight
3. Competent
4. Inspiring
5. Integrity
This doesn't just go for clan leadership but many things in general. As to why I chose the third on my list rather than the first? I've seen many leaders in RS who are honest and have a good deal of foresight, however competency is lacking as you need to have an idea where to go with your clan. Even if you can't take big strides, even small baby steps in a direction will work.

Campo: We’ve focussed on the individual level a bit, but let’s talk a bit about KoV itself. What, in your view, is the most important factor about KoV in your view, and, once more, why?

Raine Izrail: Hmm, the factor of Kingdom of Varrock? There is a lot of potential in the clan, do not get me wrong on that. Newer members always like to do things, not just in the Kingdom, but other groups. With every member we welcome, there are other members who have left, but later on return to us. So there is something worth look into there, why do people always come back? In my view, the most important factor is potential for us. While I have seen former members come and go with statements and comments of their own, realistically, we cannot go back in time and bring back the "KoV Glory Days". We can only make new ones.

Camp*: On the subject of making new ones, what plans are in store for KoV from yourself and your fellow royals?

Raine Izrail: Lately, activity tanked and the SubClans were hurting. Right now, my personal goal is to get the SubClans back on track before I have any external focus outside the clan, aside from bossing with the Empire of Falador. It is a trend that clans, without a prime directive...such as my Castle Wars group and Lost Souls, will hurt during the school years, as people are inactive. It is also important for clans to be as active as they can for the players that are still online during this time as well, as they do not risk losing members throughout this time, which is a trial in itself.

Raine Izrail: For the other Royals, they are leaders of KoV as well, and would be similar to mine, but vary in what they would focus on.

Campo: So what’s the key to getting the sub-clans back where they ought to be, in your view?

Raine Izrail: While, by definition, it is the Overseer's duties to recommend subclans to citizens of KoV, it would fall on all admins as well to do so and also put out that there are SubClans that our Citizens can join. Not just on the forums or the Clan's Personal Forums, but the clan chat as well.

Camp*: On a rather different note, would it be possible for you to reveal to the TVT’s readership who the sub-clan and citizen of the month for January is?

Raine Izrail: Hmm, as tempting as it is, we have not come to a conclusion on who the Sub-Clan of the Month and Citizen of the Month is quite yet. As there are things we do look for on the Event Thread and the individual threads for the Sub Clans.

Campo: So it’s a well known fact you get on well with EoF, one of our oldest and noblest allies. That said, if you had to choose one EoFian as your favourite, who would it be?

Raine Izrail: Hmm. That is one tough one. I would actually probably have to say Prince GPU as he has showed me quite a bit of high level bossing, minus Vorago and Yakamaru so far. While....there is quite a bit of death involved in these events, there is still fun to be had, regardless.

Campo: So, penultimate question. There was of course, recently, the traumatising scandal regarding King Lali doing Jar with his abs. What is your opinion on this horrific matter?

Raine Izrail: Normally...Lali stays away from my activities, since there is a high risk that he would get killed in most of them. However, my opinion on this? Pardon my language, but...It was quite lulzy.

Campo: Okay, and to wrap things up, if you could be any superhero (or supervillain), who would you be and why?

Raine Izrail: Superhero, huh? While I was a fan of Justice League and a few of the odd shows prior...I always had a soft spot for Wonder Woman. Not just because she's well...a woman, or her attire and whatnot. But her character portrayed in the shows and comics. Also...the idea of the Invisible Jet is hilarious.

Campo: Thank you very much for your time, Queen Raine.

Raine Izrail: Of course, no problem.
