Trivia:
In ancient times January and February didn't exist, since the Romans originally considered winter a monthless period. They were added by Numa Pompilius about 713 BC
T.C. Yasi passed us last night in the most anti-climatic way possible. It was downgraded to a Tropical Depression about 9 or 10pm (AEST), which was about the time it was above us. After all the warnings & the measures we took in anticipation of Mt Isa's first cyclone, all we got were wind gusts of 50kph (31mph) and light rain all night. It continues to rain now, but as like a nice ground soaking rain. The Leichhardt River, which is normally a dry river bed is flowing well; some of the lower road crossings are under water, but this is very typical for our wet season.
All in all, we have had much more severe thunderstorms as part of our normal wet season than this cyclone.
We didn't even lose power.
I should point out that the coastal areas which were hit by T.C. Yasi as a catergory 5 cyclone are devastated. 85% of Australia's banana crops are flattened, roads, houses & boats are destroyed. There was a 2 metre (6.5 feet) above sea level storm surge and 9 metre (29.5 feet) waves. No price has yet been attached to the damages, but that will come soon enough.
No confirmed loss of life, although there is 1 missing man last night who hadn't contacted collegues as arranged.
EDIT: I claim this page in the name of Mr Carrot! All your post are belong to us.
