Clan Cups have potential to bring the community together with exciting events. After a two-year break, I think it has a chance to come back stronger.
Here are some suggestions to make it succeed:
1) Many of the past Cups had feedback threads with participants' comments on issues and solutions. Find these and take a read
2) Advertise, advertise, advertise. Compared to player-cups, Jagex could do this SO much more effectively, yet typically has not and this has hurt participation. Leverage your social media to the full. Not only to get clans to sign up, but also to keep the hype up during the Cup. Good streaming could be a powerhouse.
3) Make sure the rules are stone solid from the get-go and can be consistently upheld. Otherwise the competition loses credibility. Learn from the mistakes of past Cups and put each rule through the wringer. They should be easy for clans to comply with and be necessary to the fairness of the competition. Oh, and watch out for the ‘mass recruiting’ rule - that’s a royal pain.
4) Many clans were unhappy with past Cups because they felt they had no chance against the strongest clans. Although it would not reflect a clan’s ‘real’ strength, I would suggest using 07 style tournament worlds for some activities to ensure equal access to levels and gear.
5) I would not suggest that players run the Cup again, although they could help JMods in select areas. A RS-wide competition can only be properly hosted by people with dev tools. Regardless of how well organised or fair players can be, they will always be mistrusted and will not be able to provide proper competition environments or rewards in a game structured like RS. Again, after a two-year break, the Clan Cup has a chance to come back with a bang and leave a lasting impression. A player-run one would not be able to achieve this.
Anyway, if you would like any insight into the rules of past Clam Cups, the decisions taken or the criticisms, feel free to dm me on Discord -
