My clan has recently fallen in to disrepair, I was just wondering if any of the more seasoned clan leaders among us have any tips for recruiting new members and keeping the members that we currently have.

Current clan size is only 13, used to be significantly larger

I am not the original owner of the clan

Only a couple of the 13 members that we still have are even active players still

Hey Jack,

I can only give advice on what works in my experience, having had a similar situation after a break of 5 years from the game.

Firstly, if your current members are still somewhat active, even if there's not many of them, cater to them first. Losing your core base of members isn't worth recruiting new ones, because new ones don't have the connection to the clan that your existing members might.

Second, focus on recruiting people that fit well with the clan and, if possible, are happy to be active in chat. A clan chat becoming busy again can do wonders. This is best done by making friends first, then extending an invite to them, rather than the vex-standing recruitment of old.

Thirdly, if your Citadel has closed due to the lower members, work on reopening that. It is a major boon to any clan and some may choose not to join a clan without one.

Lastly, just realise that it likely won't be a quick process. Be friendly and fair, interact with your clan members, help any that need it, and simply foster a healthy community. Over time, more people will be attracted to that.

Good luck, amigo.

I tend to find the forums a good place to start looking for new members. Start with a recruitment thread in one of the specialist clan forums, then maybe search in the looking for clan forum if you want to recruit people directly. Tell them a bit about your clan or add them in game and have a chat with them!

Just remember to focus on your current members as well as focusing on getting numbers quickly. I always keep the mentality of quality over quantity. Good luck!!!

I'm in agreement with this (and the post above it).

The Forums are a good place to start looking for people, and the threads that people post on can help you to gauge what sort of person they are. I'd recommend you don't make one invite template and spam post it on every 'looking for a clan' thread that you find - personalise it a little. A personal message to a new recruit can go a long way.

Striking up conversations in-game can be pretty good too. You can do this pretty much anywhere; but areas such as Taverley and Burthorpe act as an introduction point to both old and new players, so you may be able to pick up some recruits there. Interacting with players at The Beach is also the sort of environment that's perfect for making new friends and potentially clan mates.

I'd also recommend creating a recruitment thread for your clan, and adding a link to it in your signature.

Great suggestions above! Also wanted to add - I'd be transparent with your current members and see if they want to help build the clan up. Maybe even offer rewards for those who help recruit in the clan's time of need.

if you want a clan to grow with a lot of members then constant advertising works, iv done this in a few clans and they all still remain active to this day. advertising ingame and on the forums.

If you want more of a tight nit clan then texerish covered it well.

Be prepared to be the only one to do this though, its tough finding people to help for a continuing period of time although some will. Depends how good you are at nagging i was never good at nagging ppl lol

I recruited people from teams in game. We started it with 7 players 20. July 2006. The clan has been active and growing since then. Never wanted it to be big but it's been 270 or little less for a while.

Shared activities, shared interests, shared dreams... also teamwork, good team spirit kept us together. We ask only good manners, respectful friendly attitude towards each other and looking for intelligent mature members. No mandatory events but activity is appreciated.

A lot of pro and beginner PvMrs joined us through the years, a lot of warbanders for a while too. Also people who liked minigames, dungeon. Good bunch of skillers too, as we are hosting years of skilling contests, every month.

From forums I think I recruited max 5 players. Why so few? They were looking for a clan and to them, it didn't matter so much is it mine or some other. I described we got good team spirit but it was just a word to them, they didn't feel what I mean by that. When I said we got well-mannered community some stepped back right away, others found it out in a hard way that swearing and cursing are not allowed. But some said it's wonderful and they have been looking for a place like that.

Identity matters. If your clan has any kind of quality, don't hesitate to say it out loud and if needed put it into requirements.

Niceness matters. Always try to sort out difficult things without insulting each other. We keep focus on good teaming instead of lashing out and exploding over mistakes and bad luck. When people scream and shout nonsense, it gets very difficult to succeed at high-end PvM. Can't teach beginners with disturbing noise. So I keep the voice chats helpful and joyful and I really care about the culture.

Prepare to lose a few. Some people join activities in need of 1 kill or 100 kills or title or armour set but drop out as soon it's done. Running clan for 12 years - like mine, it depends a lot on the warm, fun, happy friendship and helpfulness between clan members.

I would personally stay away from the LFC forum section. There are some people that watch that section like hawks that will get potential recruits a lot faster than you unless you are willing to pay A LOT of attention to that section. I find recruiting in-game works far better. Tailor you method to fit you, and make sure that it's something that works. Keep trying different recruiting methods (in-game, like I said,) until you find one that works for you.

Best of luck!

Update on my above post: I made a thread in the CLF a while back when I was having a lot of trouble recruiting. Our clan was seriously struggling. I came out of the hole by reading a book by Dale Carnegie titled "How To Win Friends And Influence People." This book allowed me to bring my clan back after I trusted someone else with the rank of owner and he ended up kicking EVERYONE so our clan exp was reset. I recruited 100 people over the course of a month, with my record being 18 people in one day. Mind you, these people all had a total level of 2000+ and had RuneScape membership, of course. I went from being terrible at recruiting to becoming a recruiting monster (in a good way.) I'd give that book a shot, who knows? It might be the piece of gold you're looking for!

I see lots of looking for a clan threads wanting a small clan so you can play on that as you grow. Make a good clear presentation of your clan and post that in the applicable forum, linking to that in your thread presentation. Keep your thread bumped daily. Revise wording as your clan grows.

Read carefully every thread looking for a clan and post invites on the ones applicable to the direction you intend your clan to go in. Add the names you post to in your friends list and pm them when they log in. Be sure to revise your invite as your clan grows.

Persist and keep persisting. Sometimes you get 2 members out of every 100 you post to or contact but sometimes that's the way it goes. Just keep on going and slowly but surely you'll grow your clan.

What has worked for my clan is to ask whomever may be considering your clan to guest a bit so clan members can meet them prior to invite. Observe how the interaction goes to see if they will mesh well with others.

The best of luck growing your clan to the size you hope for. Much success to you! :)
