Hey philosophy majors! Its time to be able to do something with your degree!

Just kidding. But I own a website for my clan, and myself, and my staff post articles on it all the time. One such article was the "Thoughts From A Clan Philosopher". This article suggested the philosophies of running the "Ideal Clan". I wanted to share this with all you leaders and see if you have any clan philosophies of your own.

1.) A Strong Central Command

A clan requires a strong central leader. This way decisions that need immediate action can be made on the spot, without having to take a slow process of a vote. Since most communication is done in game, the time it takes to complete an actual vote (with a majority of all able-voting members/leaders voting) is too long to push forward and continue to be productive. Since this leader makes most of the decisions, he or she must remain active in the clan in order to be available when needed.

2.) Open-Minded Central Command

Not only must the clan have a strong central command, it must also have a leader who is willing to listen to those surrounding him or her. Humility is important for a leader in any case. Being able to admit that he or she is wrong, is a strong characteristic of a good leader. If he/she can do that, then you have found yourself a good clan.

3.) An Active Member-base

A clan is not a clan if it does not have its members. In order for the clan to succeed you must have active members in order to have retention. If there is never any socializing within the clan, or people who interact with each other, people will start to look elsewhere. The active member base is mostly for the retention of the clan, it keeps people happy.

4.) Can People Relate?

If someone does not find something that they can relate between the clan and him/herself then they will not show interest. For example, lets say a player likes to do mostly skilling within the game of Runescape, but the clan mostly does PVM. That member will not join, because it doesn't match their same interests. Having a clan that has multiple focus areas does better than both clans with narrow focus areas, and very broad focus areas. Too many focus areas and there wont be enough activeness in every area to make everyone happy.

5.) Constant Recruitment

We have already addressed that a clan member-base is important. But we all know that people do not play a game forever. People go inactive and that isn't something that you can always control. A constant recruitment of players is always important in a clan, because it keeps the member-base active, and brings in constant fresh faces of pixels to the atmosphere.

6.) A Proper Ratio Of Leaders To Members

One person cannot run a 500 member clan by him/herself. Help will always be needed, but how much help is always the key. A proper ratio of people in a Position Of Power (POP) to the amount of Members (M) is one of the most important things. Too many leaders means too many people in power representing problems, too few leaders results in less management and a larger workload of the current leaders. Knowing the difference between being the leader of a clan and a job in actual life is important. Rome fell because it became too big, and wasn't easily managed.

7.) Rules

Rules are needed to promote order. A clan must have order to further progress. To be specific, a clan should have rules that prevent arguments or tension from happening. For example, a rule that prevents the discussion of controversial topics (drugs, politics, religion, etc.). This kind of rule promotes a happy stress free environment for your clan. The less arguments there are, the more your members will get along and what to do events with each other.

8.) Reinforcement and Punishment

Members should be rewarded for desired behaviors, and punished for undesired behaviors. These must both be done swiftly and be justified. This, once again, builds the rentention in the clan and promotes good behaviors. Setting people as examples is extremely important, do not let people get away with something, for it could come back to haunt you. Treat everyone fairly.

9.) Cooperation

A clan must give its members benefits, and a member must give back to their clan. This cycle builds a relationship between the member, and its clan. Putting work into a clan makes the dedication to it grow further.

10.) Resources

A clan must have multiple resources for a member to use such as forums, websites, voice chat servers, etc. These are important for information to be passed along between members increasing knowledge and skill within the clan. This promotes communication, which is important in any kind of relationship that you will have.

I agree with everything, except this:

I don't think this is true in reality. The fact is some of the strongest Clans are those with 1 focus, especially PVM Clans.

It totally depends on what he ment with "does better". Clans with a narrow focus will do better in their focus area, but have a much harder time when it comes to recruiting. Especially in the PvP scene, we don't see many new recruits. So when it comes to sheer numbers (like in the Jagex Cup), all-round clans and multi-focus clans would be able to do better than those who only focus on PvP.

Overall, the best clan is the clan that makes you happy. For me that's PvP clans, but for someone else it could be an all-round clan :)

I only agree with 3, 4, 6, 8-ish and 10.

The others are extremely generalised and are only ideal for clans of limited capacity or "ideals".

It is not necessary to have a centralised decision making strategy and despite having much faster responses, it has been seen many times that a matrix chain of command is much more effective for complicated changes in a clan. As such this will be variable depending on the matter.

Having an open-minded central command contradicts your first point of the leader making intuitive decisions faster so this doesn't make sense at all.

Constant recruitment is hardly necessary and in an "ideal" clan, members should come at some times due to existing clan activity without having to directly recruit members but still main consistency.

Progress has always been in many cases, limited by order and rules rather than supported. Its a different situation that you applied this but I do understand it as my clan does this too.

Regarding 8, with a clan that recruits and targets the right members with the right skills at the right time and place, this won't be necessary and a built in chain of command should allow there to be an adequate incentive for those that follow the values of the ideal clan.

If you require motivation in order to make clan members give back to the clan then such a relationship is not one that is sustainable for a long period of time. This would be similar to a relationship formed by lending money. Promote a community where the members will cherish it to be so because of what the clan is would probably be much more ideal.

Just my brief opinion on it :P

What is meant by a strong central command is that if there is a need for an immediate decision IE a member is trolling and spamming the chat despite warnings and needs kicked, would you allow that person to stay in there and do those things, while a vote takes place? Of course not because they are damaging the environment and experience of the clan. That is what that point is for.

The open minded command point is to address that a leader must listen to advice, and be able to admit when he/she makes a mistake. They dont contradict each other, they go hand in hand with the characteristics of a good leader.

As for the constant recruitment, players leave the game all the time. It isnt because of the clan its because they get burnt out or IRL things etc. etc. Constant recruitment is meant to counter that. No matter how fantastic of a clan you run, people are going to stop playing the game.

I do respect your side though, very interesting points!
