Hello :)

Today was yet another day we welcomed a new scamming guest. These
guesting accounts
always resemble the name of a key rank in a different clan (in this case DoctorDylan instead of Doctor Dylan, note the lack of a space) so a website like Runeclan doesn't instantly give reason to suspicion, as you might not notice the difference when looking them up.

Minutes later, clannies are receiving PMs from someone with a
name resembling one of our clan admins'
(this time the PMs came from W30 AlIoy... one of our admins is W30 Alloy (note the capital i instead of an l).

Now this is a known scam. The
guesting account
is used to check who is online, then the
admin resembling account
is used to ask for money. This happens every few weeks, and I believe there are a few simple solutions:

1) Make sure there is a bigger difference between the capital i and the l in PM like there is in public.
2) Of course, turning PM to friends or closing CC to guests would also solve this, but this is just not wanted in many cases.
3) My third solution would also help in recruiting and I have read similar requests on these forums. I suggest being able to set a certain requirement to be able to guest in your clan. This means that for example in my clan where the requirement is 2000 total, only people with a total level of 2000 or above can guest. These
guesting accounts
are never in the hiscores as they are freshly made, and would therefore not be able to guest. Most clans have a requirement of some sort (eg level/membership) and this could therefore fix the issue of unwanted guests for many clans, as well as helping out recruiting effectively.

Let me know what you think If you know a different solution that doesn't require closing chat to guests, I can add it to this post. These scammers have made way too much money already and should be stopped.

1) i believe plans are in the works to change the font, how long that will take is another issue however

3 this has been suggested before yes, no progress or official thoughts on this but i support it, its a good idea. There was also an idea to filter out if f2p from guesting which i also support however this caused people to lose their minds.

Losing their minds? Haha why, if it's purely optional to avoid F2P guests, surely there's no need to be upset? Or any other form allowing some people to guests and some not for that matter. I mean I believe you haha, I just don't understand why. It's been a thing for a long time to invite some recruits and not others based on requirements and no one bats an eye, so why should guesting be any different..?

The level requirement doesn't disallow someone from guesting and then still doing the same thing. There's still 250k accounts that are active with 2k+ total levels. 23 200ms. Founder of Jamandy52 skilling clan. Favorite skill: Construction. Love skilling. Love minigames.

Very true, although from my personal experience these bad guests are always new. It would at least make it a lot harder.

Hi, i have never experianced this at all in my clan, and its been almost a year since i took over the clan. however like the 2nd post above said, this has been talked about with making the font bigger etc, and jagex is putting more work into clans so maybe this will be on top or near top of list to be written into the game.

Just on the note of setting configurable join requirements, I'm going to leave this here because this was actually a proposed update by Jagex. Though I'm not sure if it's still being worked on...

Configurable join requirements: Combat level, total level, members/free

On topic though, I honestly can't believe how low scammers have gone to impersonate well-respected Clan Leaders in order to trick people (generous people) out of their virtual gold. This is a game after all, and they're just going beyond the scope of being outright scammers. They're pretending to be someone in a clan who is trusted by their fellow clan members, abusing that trust, and running off with their own greed and someone's gold.

Hopefully this comes to an end when the font is changed.

Tysm McCoy and Sicariu for your replies. I didn't know (although hoped of course) that the font is being changed and that join requirements are perhaps looked into. I believe they are both updates that will improve the game in more ways than just avoiding this clan scam and I will be looking forward to them.

This whole situation is just getting way out of control...

This topic was discussed before which can be found here.

An issue being flagged and being discussed internally is significantly different to being "worked on" - one is the early stages where we have to assess impacts and scope of the work and then look for resource, the other is it actively being developed. Changes like this are not quick fixes - they often have affects significantly beyond the immediate focus and need to be made with some delicacy.

As is - this change is being worked on right now by the graphics team. I would hope to see it in game soon.

Font changes are extremely complicated and required massive amounts of testing - we have flagged the issue with the engine team, as well as player support and both teams are looking at the best way to resolve the scamming issue.

Personally - I have experienced it before in my clan also, and I've been asking for over a year for font changes, i'd really want to see it changed to Times New Roman font so it's clearer if people are using an L or an i

In regards to Mod Hunter's post/thread, that has been dropped as a project as far as i'm aware. Though a feature I really wanted was showing your rank in the chat which is something OSRS has for their friends chat which does go to show it is possible.
