If you have lowercase L's or capital i's in your name, or are in a clan where other members (admin+) do, you should take the necessary precautions to protect yourself or your clanmates against impersonation and scamming.

There have been a lot of impersonators lately, mainly targeting clans and impersonating high-ranked clan members by asking for trust trades from (and scamming) clanmates. Clan leaders (admin+) are the biggest targets, due to naturally being a source of authority and trust.

It is done through swapping lowercase L's and capital i's which look nearly the same if you don't pay too much attention, especially to detail, and allows scammers to create names that look identical to yours to scam your clanmates/friends.

This can be completely prevented by creating accounts with names that look similar to yours (all different combinations), and hence making the RSN's unavailable for scammers to use.

For example, let's say your RSN is Fally .

These are all the possible combinations you should cover (by creating accounts for), and as a result you will be 100% impersonation-proof:

Faiiy
Faily
Faliy

Don't let the scammers win or leave yourself vulnerable. No one would be able to target your clan if this is done.

We shouldnt have to do this
I agree that it's unfortunate that we have to, but it's becoming more and more of a problem and awareness and ways to prevent it need to be done. We need to be more proactive in preventing these issues, rather than reacting after something happens to our own clans.

After about the third CLF thread about this, my clan issued a statement on our Facebook page (Most active members are following it) warning people of this issue. Some steps we use to be proactive are having "registered" alts for people (That person confirming it's their alt) and having their alts in the clan.

Also, we do not typically allow clanmates to ask each other for sums of cash (falls under our Begging rule), and to message that clanmate on FB or in our Group Chat there if they're questioning the legitimacy of the account. We tell the "alt" something along the lines of "Okay, you have to confirm in our FB chat that you're [person's name]." If they're who they claim to be, they're usually very easy-going about it and message right away. If it's an impersonator, they'll rage, look for a way around it, or claim they'll confirm it later.

Having had my name for over 10 years I certainly am not going to change it.

If Jagex would sort out the I l problem in fonts then it would be a great help. But even if they did there are other look a likes Tigergal 44 instead of Tigergal44 for example.

you're right we shouldn't however people still do this. We have actually had this happen to a few people, though at the time neither of them were staff(one still isn't) so it's not just leadership/staff that is getting targeted but clan members in general.

I know for my clan though we are kind of just in the place of we've made everyone in the clan aware of this happening as well as if someone guests or PMs we put them on our banlist while also reporting them(if they're breaking rules).

Thanks for the advice Progs, I'll be sure to pass it around to my clan :)

One person did once create an alt with my irl name... And some do have 'ceecs' in their name cause of Ceecs Clan.

I did make sure that the info about my alts is on my forums + I let it know that my alts have a Deputy Owner rank in my clan, so they knowthat someone who puts 'ceecs' in his name without that rank is not me ;)

Not changing your name - the request is to create accounts with names that look like yours, in order to make the RSN's unavailable for impersonators.
