(¸.•´ __(¸.• 2.1 MANUAL FOR TOUR GUIDES

These tips were gathered from the different experiences, found by our Tour Guides during Tours. Hopefully, these Tips for Tour Guides will help future Guides offering Tours, therefore improving on the past Tours.
Thank you to all involved, who helped compile this Manual.
Best wishes and may all your future Tours be filled with enjoyable experiences.

¥ ¥ ¥ So You Want to Run a Tour? ¥ ¥ ¥

¤¤¤ Knowing Your Role ¤¤¤

:=: I want to hold a Tour, but I don't know how :=:
Starting a Tour is easy.
Permission isn't needed.
There is no need to register or apply.
No one owns the Tour and anyone is allowed to hold a Tour. The only requirement is following the Team Penguin Rules.
Our thread is also affiliated with Team Penguin's Friend Chat channels. Check the posted Schedules indicating the channels being used.
To announce your Tour, state the Meeting Place and the time remaining before departure.
For example:
"Tour Bus leaving in 10 minutes from (insert location)."
It is common courtesy to avoid spamming the chats with the adverts, allowing solo or group hunters the ability to read called out locations. Usually, adverts are called out every 5 minutes. Nearing the last 5 minutes before departure, adverts can be called out at 3, 2, and 1 minute intervals.

2.2 :=: What is required of a Tour Guide? :=:
Simply follow Team Penguin Rules and have Fun and Patience.
Being friendly and helpful are a Big Plus.
Anyone can lead hunters to penguin locations, but having the stable mentality to deal with disruptive hunters is the key to a Happy Tour.
Having certain Quests completed and Lunar Magicks are also helpful and useful in the route planning, to ease transportation.
You don't have to post an official Schedule, for it may be daunting for a lot of Guides. Post a short notice or Announcement including the Meeting Place, Time and Items Needed. When necessary, freely use the Team Penguin's main Schedule format, by copying and editing.
To avoid confusion, at the completion of each Tour, it's general practice to edit the posted Schedule/Announcement indicating that the Tour is completed.

:=: Do I have to hold daily Tours every single time a hunter requests it? :=:
No...
You are not required to do anything!
Tours are freely given, because you like to offer them to the community. In our experience, it's not recommended to hold daily Tours, because it might easily cause burnout. If you enjoy offering Tours, then go for it! If a hunter requests a Tour and you are unable to do a round trip of Gielinor, then you can do a verbal Tour via Private messages (PM) or using your Chat Channel. Other than that, just point them to the different resources available.
For examples:
- the Penguin Locations v# thread with the most current locations found on the last few pages
- any of the four Team Penguin's Friend Chat channels (found on Page 1 Post 1 of that thread)

¥ ¥ ¥ Planning Ahead: Scheduling, Items and Announcements ¥ ¥ ¥

¤¤¤ How can I plan my route? ¤¤¤

Try to scout the penguin locations about an hour before the Tour. For the ease of the hunters, all
Non-Quest penguin locations should be spied first and Quest locations spied last. Remember, not all hunters have all the Quests completed. Remind them of the Quest needed, before going into that Quest area. If there are two or more penguin locations close to each other, try to spy them one after the other. If using a charter ship, make sure they aren't left behind. If a House Portal is used to teleport, indicate the owner's name and check for lost hunters stuck outside.
Try to become familiar with Gielinor's Geography and the types of teleports accessing the areas. If you are using Lunar Magicks, make use of the different telegroup spells. If not, remember to indicate that the hunters supply their own telerunes (teletabs for low level hunters) and plan the routes that way.

¤¤¤ What should be announced before starting a Tour? ¤¤¤

It's recommended to forewarn the hunters of any important details regarding the Tour before it starts. Announce the Items List, to allow time and preparation, incase the hunters need to buy them. The Tour start Time and Location should also be announced. If you are using a Friend Chat channel during the Tour, announce which channel to join, but DO NOT advertise in Team Penguin's channels.
Each time you use a group teleport, explain to the hunters how to set the accept-aid option to ON. Remember, a lot of hunters don't know the term Accept-Aid or that it requires the option to be ON.
Many skillers and low level hunters like to know the amount of penguins they can spy and which Quests are required. On occasion, World 24 will have the Mort Myre/Canifis penguins herded to the east coast of the Digsite on Thursdays (join the fc: The Herders). This informat

¤¤¤ What items should I take/wear? ¤¤¤

If you are using Lunar Magicks, bring all the runes required for the spells.
Lunar spells that may be helpful are: Catherby Group teleport (for banking and charter ship), Port Khazard Group teleport (for charter ship), Humidify (for Desert travel), Group Poison Cure and Group Heal.
A cheap way to temporarily raise your magic level is wizard mind bombs. They raise your magic level by 3 if you have 50+ magic and cost only a few coins. It's recommended you buy them from the Burthorpe Inn. You can quickly buy and in bulk. Magic potions may also help by boosting your level by 5.
Wielding Banners help by making you more visible to the Bus. A Family Crest is required. Talk to Sir Renitee, on the 2nd floor, in the eastern Falador Castle, to buy a Family Crest. You can make a Banner with one plank and cloth in a Player Owned House (POH) using the Banner Easel (level 48 Crafting is required).
Team Penguin's official cape is Team cape-41. It may be helpful to wear this cape for the Bus will know you are affiliated with penguin hunting. Scouts, Trackers, Trappers and Team Penguin Ranks often wear this cape which is helpful when you are trying to locate the penguins. Anyone wearing this cape will appear as a blue dot on your Mini Map.
Wearing the Rings of Seeking also help in locating the penguins easier, if the tracker is also wearing one.

¤¤¤ Protecting Hunters ¤¤¤

:=: Which areas are considered dangerous and what should I warn the Bus before taking them there? :=:
Most hunters on the Bus are unfamiliar with Gielinor's Geography so their life is in your hands! Warn them of danger before venturing into these areas so they are well prepared in advance. If a penguin is lost, then have the hunters sit in a safe area and wait for you while the penguin is being found.
You can also offer completely separate Tours of these areas to cut down on the suspense.
Areas of the greatest danger to hunters are the (a) Ape Atoll, (b) Deserts, (c) Elf Lands, (d) Feldip Hills, (e) Mos Le'Harmless, (f) Mort Myre Swamp, (g) Slayer Tower and (h) Wilderness. In other words, any of the areas that allow hunters to be attacked by NPCs or other players are considered dangerous!
For all areas where there is a high instance of aggressive NPCs, advising hunters to set
auto-retaliate OFF may alleviate much of the danger, as they continue running, without the need to turn around to face the aggressive monsters.

¤¤¤ Protecting Penguins ¤¤¤

:=: How do I avoid breaking traps? :=:
Before arriving at locations, you will find it very effective, if you warn the hunters, to avoid stepping on Trappers. Ask them politely, as they are close to arriving at the penguins, to set their run to OFF and start walking.
Take the time to check where you are stepping and stop a fair distance from the trapped penguins. Try not to stop too far away. If the hunters can't see the penguins, they will run ahead of you to look for them. Remember, the Bus is following you and if you step into the trap, so will the Bus!
If the penguin is trapped inside a room, ask the Bus ahead of time to go in quickly to spy and leave just as quickly. If any doors (like at the Yanille wall) were opened to gain entry, please remember to ask the last person spying to close them. If there are fences, ask the Bus to spy over the fence.
This helps to educate hunters in the good practice of penguin spying and hopefully, eventually, they will learn to continue using these same practices when spying penguins on their own.

:=: What happens if the Bus breaks a trap? :=:
If the Bus is a large group, the best thing to do is to stand far enough away from the Trappers allowing them to re-trap the penguin. Trying to aid in re-trapping the penguin will often do more damage than good. With so many hunters around, it is hard to see and hunters will step on each other.
In the case a trap is broken without a Trapper, remember to announce it in the Friend Chat channels so hunters know and Trappers also know a re-trap is necessary. If there are only a few hunters and they want to help re-trap, then sure, have a go at it! Maybe it will give them a new hobby :) .

¤¤¤ What about Familiars and Pets? ¤¤¤

Please Note: Familiars on the bus are not allowed and you will be asked to dismiss them or to leave the tour.
It's recommended that Guides explain to them the reasoning behind it.
Familiars will often cover the Guides and they also make it harder for Guides to notice, if anyone is falling/lagging behind the group. Guides need to know so they can slow down the Bus, enabling the lagging hunters time to catch up to them.
Hunters also need to see the Guide when a Group teleport is about to occur.
Also, having too many Familiars and Pets around, will make the area more crowded than usual, resulting in a greater chance of broken traps or increased lag.
Of course, you don't have to explain all this in great detail. Most hunters are courteous and explaining easier visibility of Guides will get players to dismiss their Familiars.

¥ ¥ ¥ What Do I Do If....? ¥ ¥ ¥

¤¤¤ What is different about Weekly Reset Tours? ¤¤¤

These Tours are very different from regular weekday/weekend Tours. On Weekly Reset, this group is mainly composed of impatient hunters whose main goal is to spy their penguins as quickly as possible. Others can't keep up with the chat and get confused (not saying that all hunters are like this). They are a rowdy bunch and usually spam the public chat or are generally excited to be hunting in such a big group.
It's recommended to advise the hunters to temporarily add the Guides to their Friend's List and set Public chat to Friends. We find this often helps when the Tour group is extremely large.
Another way to insure your directions are visible to the hunters, is to use a different colored text, so it shows up instead of the normal yellow text. Green seems to be the most effective colour, but red is shorter to type.

¤¤¤ Should I run or walk during the Tour? ¤¤¤

Finding the balance between walking and running can be difficult at times. A rule of thumb to use: watch the Mini Map for lagging dots and ask the hunters to inform the Guides, when their run falls below 10%. When you notice the dots are starting to lag behind you, begin walking or rest for a few seconds. Make use of the Musicians along the way. If you know the area you are heading to is dangerous, have the Bus rest to full 100% before continuing with the journey.

¤¤¤ I can't do this alone, how can I ask for help? ¤¤¤

We have a list of TOUR ATTENDANTS (Roles) that a Guide can use during a Tour, found on
Page 1 Post 5. If you need help, post on this thread indicating the Roles needed. Another Guide or hunter may volunteer if they are available. If not, ask for a volunteer from the Tour group. You will be surprised at how many hunters are willing to offer their services.
If you need locations, enter one of the Team Penguin's Friend Chat channels to see if a Rank is present or anyone who can help keep track of the changing locations, while you are running the Tour. Inform them, that you are holding a Tour and ask if they can help with locations. Be aware that some will be busy (especially on Weekly Reset) so they may not be able to help, but most are willing.

¤¤¤ How do I run a Friend Chat channel? ¤¤¤

Using a chat channel is up to each Guide. Gathering hunters into one chat channel makes it easier when directing them to the locations. This allows for lost hunters to catch up to the group. If you are unable to be in the specified chat, because you are gathering location information from one of the Team Penguin's Friend Chat channels, ask the hunters to help you in updating the locations, by calling out each time the Bus spies a penguin. This also helps the Team with updated information to share with the rest of the community.

Depending on the number of Buses running during Weekly Reset, the Guides will be using these chats:
Friend Chat for Express: W60express
Friend Chat for Normal Tour: W60tour

During the week, you may use your personal chat channel or one of Team Penguin's empty Friend Chat channels (see Page 1 Post 1 to use the empty channel you are most comfortable).

Be very careful with kicks and/or bans from your chat channel. Try to give the hunters warnings before you kick. Remember, they are asking you for help and most are not familiar with the rules. If they are doing something wrong, give them a warning and if they become extremely disruptive, then you might need to remove them. Removing without warnings may cause bitterness and arguments to ensue.

¤¤¤ A Hunter is abusing me on the Tour, what do I do? ¤¤¤

We find the best way to deal with abusive players is to ignore them. If their language gets out of hand, report it, using the "Report Abuse" feature. The worst thing to do is to respond with nasty comments. Keep your calm and add them to your Ignore List. If other hunters on the Bus feel the need to defend you and it erupts into a full blown argument, thank them for their good intentions and point out the fact that the abusive player is enjoying the ride since he/she has not felt the need to hop off the bus. Don't feed the

¥ ¥ ¥ Ultimate Mission ¥ ¥ ¥

The ultimate mission should be:
Educate hunters so they continue spying with courtesy and respect for other hunters in the community.
By calling out locations to update the Friend Chat channels each time hunters spy and trying your best to avoid stepping on Trappers, helps the next set of hunters to easily spy their penguins and/or polar bear. This will result in less spamming in the chat channels when asking for locations.
This is also a chance for us to extend a helping hand to those who are not as efficient at hunting penguins as the veteran hunters. It is a chance for community bonding and camaraderie. If each of us do a small part, we can make a big difference! :)
If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to post on this thread and we will edit the Manual as required. This Manual is by no means the best guide to use, but it has been compiled to the best of our knowledge. Feel free to experiment when touring and post your advice. Thank you for reading our Manual and we hope you enjoy running the Tours as we have in the past.
