Which Perks?

If you finally managed to get that augmentable mattock, it turns out there are only a few choices for selecting perks that actually help you. Dragon (lvl60), Crystal (lvl70), Imcando (Lvl80) and Mattock of Space and Time (Lvl90), and should you be so lucky Tony's mattock (Lvl99) can all be augmented.

Remember that Lady Ithell can help upgrade your augmented Mattock carrying across your augmentation and perks, so you wont need to remove those. The useful perks are:-

1.
Imp Souled
, for a probability moving soil, materials and artifacts to your bank using prayer points. You can use an ancient elven ritual artifact or pray pots to generate your prayer point whilst excavating.
2.
Honed
, to improve the success rate of material excavation
3.
Prosper
, to get a chance of receiving clue scrolls
4.
Fortune
, to have a small chance to double soil, materials and artefacts to go to your bank
5.
Furnace
, to burn materials for xp - for best xp/hr
6.
Refined
, to help material caches from depleting.
7.
Enlightened
, to level your mattock faster for invention XP.

There are a few useful combinations of these which can be used. For instance you can create the following combinations in rough order of popularity:-

Imp Souled and Honed
I6/H6 although I6/H5 and I5/H6 or I5/H5 are also perfectly usable.

Fortune and Imp Souled
e.g. F3/I2 or F2/I3-5

Fortune and Prosper
e.g. F3/P

Honed and Prosper
e.g. H5-6/P

Honed and Fortune
e.g. H4-6/F1

Refined can be combined with prosper or fortune

It is best to explore the perks calculator on the Runescape Wiki to work out the best way to create these. Wear your invention master cape if you can, and note that in some cases invention potions or artifically reducing your invention level (by standing outside godwars 1 snowy area) can help improve the probability of the desired perk combination.

Note
Furnace may look attractive, but ultimately u need those mats that you are burning. You may end up spending more time excavating rather than repairing where most of your xp is gained. Furnace is maybe only useful if u are prepared to buy your materials in that case.

Finally, some perks like Wise which give you extra XP may become useful after the initial grace period is over.

The value of research

Research is a good source of xp and artefacts. You can expect 1-8 artefacts for 24 hours of research. Once you have fully upgraded the researchers, with the speed buffs, you can get 24h +12h +8h research achieved every day, for up to 600k+ xp per day.

The best researchers tend to be the highest ones you can use.

If you have access to all researchers, I prefer to use Elissa Giovani instead of Zanik though, for the extra guaranteed artefact. It trades a little bit more cost for more/faster xp.

TIP
:
Do 2 hour trips with Elissa instead of longer trips, so that you get more artefacts per hour!

Brooch of the Gods

Has anyone been able to test the effect of the new Brooch of the Gods with Archeaology?

It gives a +1 multiplier to precision at 100% sprite focus, making the maximum precision multiplier +6 instead of the normal +5. Ultimately this would therefore give (20%?) faster archaeology xp if you pay attention and follow the sprite.

Soran or Velucia, XP or GP?

A choice you are often faced with in Archaeology is where to hand in your collections. For Zaros collections, is Velucia better than Soran? Well it depends, are you after xp or gp.

GP - Velucia gives around 10% more Chronotes
XP - Soran gives 100 batteries for higher collections. It turns out that is better XP, as the extra chronotes from Velucia cannot match the XP rate you can get from the batteries (e.g. with research)

XP boosts

After the 30th September 2020, it will become possible to use XP lamps, bonus XP stars and XP boosting items for Archeology. Here is a summary of ways to boost your Archeaology XP:-

- Wisdom Aura, up to 2.5% for 90 minutes for legendary Wisdom
- Wise perk on Marrock for up to 50k extra XP per day
- Torstol incense sticks for 0.5% XP increase for 10 minutes
- Clan avatar boost for you and clanmates of 3-6%
- XP lamps
- XP stars
- Pulse cores

Excavating faster also gives more xp per hour, so make sure you buy all the precision upgrades. Use the archaeology boosts from the shop and compasses when excavating high level spots, and unlock the cosmic accumulator from the Desparate Measures quest.

Profitable hour at Venator remains

Excavation for one hour without buffs at Venator remains just outside Kharid-Et entrance.
- 135 artefacts
- 383 materials
- 168 ancient gravel

When repaired, costing 12.4m gp in materials, the artefacts disassemble into
-140 classic components
- 2100 historic components

This allows you to create component crates worth 22.54m (20Sep2020)
so 10.1m gp profit per hour. You make crates at the invention workbench, requiring padded parts. With buffs you can still improve on that.

Credit to Old Gab for this contribution

Sifting soil lunar spell

This new spell on the lunar spellbook is quite convenient for fast soil sifting. It is also particularly convenient during Yak Track events where you may need to screen a lot of soil. An earlier post here reported that manual screening reaches around 2000 soil per hour.

The sppell screens soil at double the speed, and you can do that right next to the materials bank. Using a mud staff, it comes at a cost of one Astral rune per material. That makes it the most profitable way of screening soil in terms of gp/hour assuming you sell the materials. Double speed and the time saving in running between bank and screening station mean you can screen at rates of up to 5680 materials/hour.
