Franklin activated the display in front of him and touched several controls, activating the shuttle's rear camera. The
Yellowstone
appeared on the screen. At least, what was left of it. A standard third-generation K-1 cruiser, the
Yellowstone
was a rounded cylinder, 120 metres long, 40 metres wide, and six decks high, with a rectangular command bridge perched on top and in the rear. The front half of the upper two and lower two decks housed hangar bays for the small complement of fighters, shuttles, and dropships. The rear twenty metres or so of each deck contained the gravitic engines and hyperdrive, with additional life support systems, repulsorlifts, power generators, fuel tanks, and shield generators scattered around the ship. What was left was given to the crew, nearly 200-strong.
Now, the ship looked like a dismembered corpse, or perhaps a puzzle that had been disassembled with a flamethrower. A section of the hull, stretching from the bow to just in front of the bridge, encompassing nearly all of deck six and the front of deck five, was simply gone, leaving exposed girders and shards of durasteel. In the rear, almost all of the hull around the engines and hyperdrive had been burned away. Bits of shrapnel and debris floated everywhere.
K-1 cruisers were near the bottom of the Neran navy's command chain, they were one of the smallest and weakest capital ships in its arsenal. But nothing could do this much damage to them in one shot, at least nothing mobile. With the size of that hyperwarp signature, whatever it was that shot at them
shouldn't
be mobile.
