Fajner was closing the cache when he felt something behind him. Not the sharp pang of an attacker or a bullet, but a warm, enveloping force. He grinned, "Good morning Gabriel, I wasn't expecting you this early."
"I wasn't either. The table has changed."
"How so?"
"An extragalatic force. They've made it into the Neran periphery, toppled Belozay, and infiltrated Atlantis."
"Hmm. Do those countries know about it?"
"Not yet, but they'll find out soon."
"That
is
worrying; our plans will have to change."
He felt another rush of force and sensed a second presence behind him.
"You cannot remain mortal," said the new voice.
Fajner remained silent for several seconds. Finally, he spoke again, "I agree."
He turned to face the archangels. They stood, unmoving, halfway across the room. At more than three metres tall, they could not be mistaken for human, but there was nobody around to make the mistake. The newcomer spoke again, "I have sealed the area in a circle. It is unnecessary to return to the island."
"Good," replied Fajner, "time is of the essence."
He began walking towards the figures, feeling the power in the air grow with every step. Reaching out through them, he sensed his original pool of power, the one he had been severed from when he had returned to Nera. Suddenly, his senses - the hardness of the concrete beneath his shoes, the sound of the air rushing through the hallways, the coolness of the armour under his robes - became distant, as though he had zoomed out and no longer occupied only the small room, but the world around it too. Not only could he sense the concrete chamber, but also the maze of hallways outside it. He could feel the rowdiness in the air as a debate raged in the Senate Rotunda, and tensity as a cetain K-1 cruiser on the edge of known space tried to signal the Fleet.
"Fetch the Twin Gods," he said, "we have work to do."
