But yes, I followed that debate with a lot of interest. Needless to say, I was happy that it remained in use! Only five countries use the flag as/as part of their main flag, (and Canada uses it at times too) although, numerous territories around the world [territories of NZ, UK, Canada and AUS] still use it.
It's a combination of the flags of England, Scotland and the historical flag of Ireland - which now represents Northern Ireland. There have been two union flags; the first was a combination of the flag of England and Scotland, which dates back to 1606, and was used politically after 1707 - when England/Wales united with Scotland to form 'The Kingdom of Great Britain'. The flag consisted of the English cross of St George, with the Scotish cross of St Andrew.
In 1801, Ireland joined the Union, creating the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland', and so its flag, the cross of St Patrick, was added to the Union flag. This created the flag we still have today. Wales is the only country of the UK not to be included in the flag, as historically, it was considered as a province/part of England.
History lesson over! Yeah, it is a shame. I prefer the A-Z games and the ones that at least require a little effort (word, letters, countries).
