Edit: Lol, I forgot to say whether you're supposed to use shaded, character reduced, or alt spaced in the assignment.

Just remember one thing, as a teacher you are here to give suggestions, not give definite corrections. I know this may not have been your intent, but you may want to be slightly more careful with your words. Instead of saying "this would look better", consider saying " perhaps this may look better". Just remember there are many different ways of looking at somethings. ¨ can be used very well in certain transitions, and sometimes you have to sacrifice thin-thick transitions if the symbol is the perfect height, or vice versa.
Anyways, just keep that in mind, not trying to dissuade you or anything, just a piece of advice for the future.

^ That semi-colon comes down pretty steep, while that ` doesn't. Maybe instead of the semi-colon you could use an alternative such as ( or {?

^ This is a good wave, but maybe some symbols could be added to make it look more smooth? Full-stops often do the trick:
