First you need to get people inspired and then keep them motivated so they don't immediately give up when their drawings don't look good yet.
I think Nop's school was important to keep me motivated. In the beginning it takes practice and one may lose motivation as the results are not always immediate. The school has a great concept (you complete tasks and try to finish 1st grade, then 2nd grade etc) which makes it easier to stay motivated - even if your image drawings still don't appeal, at least you have made some progress. Also it's one forum game among others, although different, so some forum gamers (who are not here for post count) might want to "play" it and get interested. I'd suggest bumping the sig school much more often than currently. I agree that whenever you bump ascii threads they get pushed off page 1 very soon, usually by the same people, so no new people will see them x(
I was inspired by seeing spam. I think it's a good idea to use memes that are used in responses, but instead of posting the actual drawing I would suggest posting a link to it in this thread. For example, you would post "You don't say" and make it link to the drawing in this thread. Not only do you avoid it being hidden and you being muted, but you also link people to this thread, bringing more activity here. Trollface and facepalm are already ready to be used that way.
