Thanks, that was helpful. I need to work on blending smoothly.

And yeah hair is difficult for me too. Lately I've been trying to imitate anime hair, with less detail on the head and more detail toward the ends. Still needs improvement though.

Long, i may be able to make some suggestions....


when shading something in the foreground of the picture, such as hair or skin or armor etc... try using this:

:::.::.:.:....:...:.....:......

or

....:...:.....:.::.:::.::::

And when shading up and down, keep it even like so:

When curved, curve the shading to match:
. .,,.*:::.::.:...:...:. --- starting from 3 :::
,*:::.::.:..:..:...:..: --- 3 ::: cause the curve wasnt too much
|::::.:::.::.:....:...:.: --- now 4 ::: because it was a deeper curve
`.,:::.::.:...:...:... --- 3 :::
. . `*~,::.:...:.:..:.. -- 2 ::: because its a sharper curve

To make something contrast the above shading ^ i use the following:

you use it in the same way as above^

now to make something appear to be in the background, or darker use the following:

I typically use that ^ on skin or hair. i also use it for backgrounds, or something that is supposed to be behind something, held by something etc...

another common shading technique requires judgement....

good for shading either dark or bright, but can mess up your allignment, and also may make the picture hard to see as comas are used almost all the time to start a line.

one made famous by artanis is this:

useful for bright shading

Thanks for the tips John, will definitely return to those when I get to shading. I don't think I'm ready to try shading faces and hair yet, but I plan on coming back to that one eventually. My next drawing will be a mini pumpkin, which has a lot of curves so it'll be good shading practice.
