All winners of the H'ween contest will be given 1st place credit, as each round was independent from others, but the winner and runner-up for the grand prize will be considered, for the purpose of ranking, to have been added to the hall of fame before the other winners of the competition. This will given them a higher rank than other H'ween winners unless one of the H'ween winners wins another contest.

Hey Coz,

This is a really great compilation of stories from the various different contests. For that you deserve some recognition and thanks for putting in the effort to compile them together like this. So thank you!

I also thank you for somehow ranking me first out of this whole affair, but I rather feel that that position doesn't tell an accurate story about the writers from these forums, past and present, and certainly doesn't do justice to the likes of Maia Smith, LordofDraken, Wet Rainbow, Torpeh and others who have all contributed excellent works and have won various contests, but whose pieces do not exist in the forums any more (at least I don't think they do).

I'm not sure if there's an answer to that, but the idea of ranking writers in such a definitive way clearly suggests that person A is better than person B, who is better than person C etc. As much as I appreciate the recognition I am rather uncomfortable with that whole notion, especially as I've not written actively here for some time. Maybe it would be better to list people by their achievements chronologically, but not try to rank them as such?

Incidentally, "Don't Eat the Chicken" got a "Christmas Cheer Honorable Mention" because Mod Mark H's mother (of all people) particularly liked it. I believe Maia Smith actually won that particular contest, though I couldn't tell you what the winning piece was after all these years.

But all that aside, it's great to see so many of these stories preserved here. Nice thread!

Yeah, it's a shame that we can't find some of the missing pieces you mentioned. This is something I don't think we can fix, so the best thing we can do is keep tack of new pieces.

I put in the ranking system to add a bit of interest to the Hall of Fame, an incentive to get your stories added through contests. By making the Hall of Fame a more dynamic thing which is the subject of potential competition, I think that it can have more meaning. While the ranking system isn't a perfect way to assess skill, it's the best we can do, particularly since it is composed only of official contests. If anyone gloats about their position then I'll be sure to remove them from the list, as this is something that ought not to be used in that manner.

The ranking is sort of like the Story forum's high scores. While the Hiscores' "Hall of Heroes" doesn't account for personal skill, such as the ability to win in play-versus-player combat, its information is still useful. The Hall of Fame's ranking list isn't intended to be the final say about anything, it's just a useful resource which analyses some of the data in this thread.

I'm in agreement with Dream on this one.

I can see why what you're getting at with a "general idea" on skill of writers, but I don't think everyone (especially newer members or people who drop in) will recognise that. To be ranked assumes that you enter contests, and I certainly agree with that short list that Dream supplied. I can only see problems arising through this.

But anyway, I don't think this was up for debate, so I'll be quiet now. I do know how you like to rank people, Coz. ;)

I see you changed the way the Halloween Contest results were ranked.

In another query, has Chuk won another contest that contributed to his rank? If not, there's an error, as the placings were Dyrn, Jeeves, myself and then Chuk. Not that it particularly matters to me, but I feel we should straighten it out while it's relevant.
