‘I think it is a choice.’

Is it a choice? At what point do we decide it is a conscious decision? How do we tell the right from the wrong, when we could be just as confused as those we condemn? It is, of course, not everyday that we tell our brothers we love them. Under what obligation were we to love them anyway?

This story follows the lives of two brothers, and how, in a confused moment, a catastrophe was born.

Hello, everyone. My name is Englishkid62, or commonly known as English, and it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you all to my new story, Brotherly Love. Rather than posting sequels and prequels to my other story, The Priceless, for the past few months I had been working on this new project that would reflect my current writing ability a lot more closely, as opposed to if I were to rewrite, say, The Abomination of men.

Don’t we ever get bored with that stuff? :P

For those of you who have never met me, never fear, for I do not bite and if you post here, I will guarantee a reply. Now though, due to other commitments I would not be able to log into RS, the game, as frequently as I did. You can always add me, as my private chat is always on, but do remember that I would be a rare sight in game.

For those of you who have been waiting a long time for this, I recommend you to head to the introduction to the story below, as it may interest you how this story came to be.

The amount of support I have had since my return has been amazing, and I must thank everyone for their encouragement. I had a hard time writing this story and this is perhaps the most ambitious literary project I have ever attempted to date. I hope you have a good time reading, and I hope you’ll like it. I eagerly await any comments you may have.

Finally, some rules. Behave yourself, and by posting, you are allowing your comments to be used in the Quotes section of this thread.

~Praises for Brotherly Love~

'It was you and you alone who can write something so remorselessly heartrending…You speak truly of human nature and the most ugly of our flaws, our judgment. How we judge, who we judge, and the standards with which we judge. A story of misplaced innocence, foolish interference, a life wrought with pain, regret, of love forever lost...There is nobody who can so completely grip an audience, so weave his life into a story, and create such relatable characters.' --NovelistElly

‘I've now read the whole story. English, you have written a deeply moving and thought provoking story that really makes you think about how much your actions can affect others. Certain parts really bring tears to your eyes…It is arguably one of the best stories I have ever read on these forums.’ --Jamespatter3

‘Wow…Like all of English's stories, it's a powerful, powerful story. I really think you outdid yourself. The characters can be related to. Anybody who is a little brother knows what I'm talking about…The ending feels so complete, with the digging up of the casket, but it left me feeling empty, hollow. And pretty sad. Kudos, English. You really are the greatest author on these forums.’ --Prefix

‘I must say, English, well done: stylistically interesting, significant, well executed…it's good to see some works around here with some actual gravity, and it's good to see those works put forth by skilled writers...Touching and cleverly written.’ --Arcot

‘Great story!' –-Black Drath

‘I think you did a great job crafting the characters, emotions, and moods. Good writing brings out emotion in readers, and that is what this story did for me…Also I like how you say something with your writing, you go deeper certainly than many stories on this forum. Good work.’ --Scoucher

‘Well done on another stunning piece of literature.’ –Crocefisso

‘Gah! That was so amazing. I read it in one setting. Wow.’ --Paccy

'Totally engrossed me.' --Aquawater

~Praises for Brotherly Love continued~

‘Ah, very beautifully written. Can't say I agree with everything in it, but it really is a wonderful work of literature; which is even more impressive considering English isn't your first language... Incidentally, while I didn't cry at the end, my eyes did water... well done, it's a rare day when something can get that much of a reaction out of me.’ --Nihtgaldere

‘Looking at your story literary wise, you're a freaking genius. I mean wow. At the beginning there was just enough emotion in the story to keep me reading; but at the end there was too much emotion, I could barely keep on reading. The characters are extremely well developed too. You can really feel their emotions, feel their presence…Overall, excellent job!’ --Ruben

‘I thought that this was by far one of your best work, and like Ruben, I thought way before I read it that it couldn't match what you had done with The Priceless, The Noob, or The Abomination of Men. I made this assumption not based on me questioning your talent coming back to the Story Forum, rather, the 3 were such great stories that I didn't believe that what you wrote now would be anything close to that. I was of course, proven wrong…Fantastic job.’ –Cicobe1

‘English that story was told amazingly. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much if it had been written in a different way. I don't know how to describe the story. It was so very well written. Amazing.’ –Zatevon

‘This was really a great story. I loved your descriptions and your characters were truly amazing. The small, philosophical paragraphs actually taught me something.’ --Zam0rakElite

‘Detailed, brilliant, awesome and epic! Great storylines!’ --Mcafee

'Runescape literature at its finest.' --Bawabowa

'...Speechless. Just...wow. Great.' --JaffaCook

‘It was spectacular.’ --Areno3

‘Awesome story.’ --Scribegoblin

[Because when I am old, sad, and alone, I need to read this ;) ]

Dedication:

I would like to use this opportunity to thank Elementsky21, or NovelistElly, for his friendship and continued support, and without his encouragement I may have already given up this story, and never finished the last two chapters.

I would also like to thank my readers, for their time and kindness, to read, and comment on my work. It is useless to write a story that no one reads and, if it weren’t for them, I would have given up writing long ago.

And finally, I would like to thank my sister, Evilgirl1049, who has read every single one of my stories ever since I started writing. She is also a beta-reader for this project and her incisive comments and feedback were invaluable. I would like to thank her for her time and devotion to all of my projects, only a few of which in the end proved to be, at least, not a waste of time. This story is one of such projects.

~Introduction to Brotherly Love~

It was rather strange how this story idea came by and I decided to write it. At the time, just after my return to the Stories Forum, I had decided that I needed to work on my novel and I could no longer write anything for the RuneScape Stories Forum. There simply isn’t time, and the pursuit of perfection in the end proved to kill my enthusiasm for writing.

For fun, when this idea came to me, I asked a friend of mine, K Hearts, in a mail if he would like to help me to co-write this story. It was a mail to which he never responded, so I assumed he didn't feel it was worth his time.

In March, when I reposted the Priceless, there were talks whether I would bring back the other two of my stories. Generally having a low opinion of my own works, written over two years ago, it would take a substantial amount of time to salvage what is salvageable. With my novel project falling apart, I returned my attention to writing for the Stories Forum and felt that maybe I could write something better than the previous two.

Writing a story has never been easy. The whole process from planning it out, writing it on paper, typing it, editing it, took four months, which was roughly the same amount of time I took writing The Priceless. And writing has always been a personal thing for me, and this was one reason why I felt this story so difficult to write. It was too punishing, too cruel, and I wasn’t sure if I had the heart to. It was through these harsh lessons that I learn something about myself, about others, and the world. There were moments when I just wanted to give up and forget writing altogether.

But at last, I have finished this story, 18k words of it, which is just a little more than The Abomination of men. By that time I was insecure and I wasn’t sure if the story would pull off. My sister gave it a read and gave it the go. She liked it better than The Priceless, which gave me a little comfort, and so I decided that maybe, if I posted this, my readers would like it too.

I wasn’t sure how readers would react. This story is unique in its own way. My readers should still expect from it what they would expect from my other major works, though. This story does not seek to make The Priceless obsolete or, for that matter, blow it out of proportion. Yes, this is a bit longer, but I want to show that I, as a writer, have grown and matured, something my sister also agreed when I asked her to compare Brotherly Love with The Abomination of men.

Lastly, how did I come up with the advert? It was hard to do, but I did remember the quote, ‘I believe it is a choice’, was from a friend of mine, Caydock, when I asked him a question concerning gender preference. His quote fits here perfectly, and hopefully, after the story he would be proven wrong, or at least, have his views utterly undermined.

Yet with all the expectations, I wasn’t sure if it would turn out to be the story everyone wanted it to be. This is why Brotherly Love would be the last of my major writing projects for a long time to come. This could turn out to be a complete flop, but I am almost beyond the point of caring. I know in my heart that I have written a story to the best of my ability. And, just like The Priceless, this story at its core stayed true to me. I am happy that I have written it and it will always have a special place in my heart.

So, just how bad is this story? You’ll see. :)

My other story - The Priceless

It was the golden age of the game, when all sorts of underhand and criminal activities were raging in the realms of RuneScape, long before the updates on the 10th December and 2nd January 2008, that respectively removed the unbalanced trade and the wilderness. Before then, bots, scammers were roaming on the land and spoiling the game for its players. There were complaints, and rumours, that the whole RuneScape economy was going to collapse if something wasn't to be done about them soon...

But why RuneScape? Why work so hard to spoil the game for others? What is it so priceless that they are trying to obtain?

Praises for this rewrite so far:

'Wow... truly stupendous. This is by far the most powerful piece of literature I have ever read on these forums.' --Sira

'After careful deliberation, I have come to the conclusion that I like the rewrite...The deepness of this story is astounding. It truly gives you the blatant truth of our world on a platter, whether you want to see it or not.' --Level

'I just finished this, and I must say it's absolutely wonderful...I could truly feel the emotions of the characters, and I love what you've put into this story. It's quite possibly one of the best works (if not THE best) that I've read thus far.' --Cheeze

'This story still strikes a chord deep in my heart, still causes me to shiver, still makes me feel...more alive than when I began. It inspires me to love the unloved, step out and help the helpless. You have penned a masterpiece of literature, English, and hopefully this one will live on, and inspire, longer than the last. Marvelously done! Bravo!' --Caydock

'Utterly impressive in scope, style and meaning. It was an utter pleasure to read this.' --Amoraten
