I.E.: In light of the current plague, I totally propose that we eat our children because we Totally do not have enough potatoes.

The way to tell if someone is being sarcastic is to look for words that stand out and can be used in a sarcastic manner. In this case "Totally"

This brings me to my point: No one thinks about what they read anymore, it's just easier not to.

Or maybe you should just think about what you write? Because we already do think about what we read. We know you're joking, but you still shouldn't joke about something as serious as a terrorist attack in one of the world's greatest cities that leaves hundreds of people dead or injured.

You may find it easier to deal with something like that using humor, but you shouldn't. Jokingly dismissing that as "no big deal" is arguably just as bad as seriously dismissing it, if not more. Sarcasm in general should be discouraged - it is rarely funny, is mostly used as an insult, and is not helpful or positive whatsoever.

Let's look at the facts here:
-128 dead.
-180 injured.
-Thousands of dollars in property damage.
-Entire city thrown into panic.
-Hundreds of people will never be the same.
-Possibility of it happening again, elsewhere.

And while all that was happening, you popped in to say: "Nah, no big deal."

Just let that sink in for a moment.
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

I'm legitimately speechless about this.

I don't know what to say, because words aren't enough and I feel way too damn powerless to actually be able to do something about it.

I watched a man get a heart attack over the Summer. I watched him die and I couldn't do jack **** because I would get in the way of the people who knew what to do. I did not know him, I just remember him suddenly collapsing in front of me.

I feel, strangely, now as I did in that moment. I see Paris in pain and I can't do anything about it because I'm just not able enough to. Social media is showing me the growing crowd as we see those who are qualified to act do what they can to regain control. Some of us are just frozen in the moment, our powerlessness hitting us in that very instant, while others are alert, but on stand-by, awaiting instruction from those who can act.

The most I can say about it is just a simple statement. Do not be afraid, because letting that fear rule your life and your actions means that they've won. That's the point of a terrorist . They incite terror. I am, in no way, asking you to be reckless. I am asking you to keep living your life, as though the attack did not happen, but keep those affected by it in mind. Do not be ignorant of the attack, but do not let it rule you. Help others grieve, seek justice, and, above all, do not fear.
Cower, worship, or beg. All are valid choices.

Emo, you're probably setting off alarms at Tumblr HQ right now. For that, I appreciate you greatly.

My general idea is that you can either joke about everything, or joke about nothing. There's no middle ground. Of course, other people can find your jokes to be in bad taste, and get angry at you, but I don't think anyone should be able to tell someone what they can and cannot joke about.

But then, I've always been a fan of George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Doug Stanhope, Jim Norton, etc. Comedians who basically don't give two ***** about who they make angry. Laughter is good, and a rare commodity in a world with people who take life way too ******* seriously. Thus, if you can make laughter out of something terrible and downright awful, more power to you.

The RSF probably isn't a good venue, though, considering if we bring up politics or other serious issues on here, we get beaten with sticks.

Personally, I'm not going to jump on the social media 'prayers and good wishes for France' slacktivism bandwagon, because to be quite honest, I can't do jack **** about what is going on in France, or what has happened already. If donation campaigns start up, I'll quite likely donate what I can. Regardless, people as individuals, unless they're rich or really intelligent, or have resources, are mostly impotent in situations like this.

Trying to worry about what doesn't concern you (yet) is like trying to walk on water, it's fruitless, and ultimately wastes your time. If you want to help a community help yours. small acts of kindness go a long way.
