Roughly how many people would one expect on the enemy's airship? I mean, if we assume the crew is around 70-90 members (like the Hindenburg), I think we would expect roughly half to be maintenance, bridge bunnies and officers - you probably wouldn't skimp on experienced crew members in a storm. The other half would be people with guns - of which three have already escaped.

Is this a reasonable assumption? Because if it is, Gareth’s whole “they don’t have enough men to maintain a perimeter” idea kind of falls short. But if Gareth is right, the whole "you can't catch me!" attitude of the other captain falls into stupid-evil territory.

It is not. For an airship to have a crew of that's size, you're looking at a model that there's maybe one of in the entire continent. The type of small craft that both of the ships had been one of can be crewed by 3-4 people, and the amount of a strike force they can comfortably carry is maybe 10 others.

Airships aren't big. Passenger airships only hold as many as they do because they're designed for carrying people.

If the crew was that size, we never would have stood a chance at all. I based my estimation on the fact that in our ship, which is capable of carrying dozens, there seemed to be a comparatively small number of actual crew personnel. And given that we apparently only need one person to fly the enemy ship, that would imply a minimum of one person, plus guards and a maintenance guy.

So Gareth's assessment is a slight underestimation, then?

I dunno, is it? It seems reasonable to me, especially if one is assuming that whoever was crewing the ship wouldn't be taking part in any combat.

Well, Gareth's estimation was around ten or eleven - yours seems to suggest thirteen or fourteen at most. It's not a huge difference, but still.

Just making sure because I'm trying to portray Gareth as a good strategist.

Well, the real question is how many he thinks might be on there. Like I said, one can carry about 10 extra people or so comfortably, but there's no way of actually knowing for sure how many would be on there - you saw 7, but is that really all? - or whether those crewing the vessel would actually be doing anything relevant to keeping anyone out.

The actual numbers overall wouldn't be a bad guess, if that's what you're asking. It fits the size of the ship that they're going for.
