Yes, apocalyptic films usually bring out the worst of humans, though I personally feel that tribal or nomadic peoples would remain good-natured.
I tend to be interested in those in the dark, but not when they are stereotypical. But yes, humanity overcoming mass problems is often a peculiar theme, especially characteristic of European and East Asian history. Indeed, bad people being punished for bad behaviour is what people expect, though bad people getting away with it is normal, too.
Interesting aim you have here, but now that you mention it, reflection of an evil past, and uncertainty of the future, does work in horror. Sometimes, the scariest things are not what you have went through, but what you have not encountered.
Personally, my themes in my stories and role-plays seem to be a rather grayish zone, with an emphasis on breaking through all the strengths of whatever adversity awaits. In most stories, heroes tend to overcome villains through weaknesses; I prefer to smash through strengths.
