Dear my only reader,

It is @#$%ing hard to start writing present-day stories after writing mostly RuneScape setting stories for years. I underestimated how tough the transition would be--that and I have been slacking a TON. I'm at 17k words and 25 Microsoft Word pages (hopefully the equivalent of 30-40 book pages) and I'm striving for anywhere from 80k to 100k words for the finished story. Luckily, I have all summer to work on the story and get everything perfect, but with all the excitement I have about it, I'm sure I won't finish it, or worse... It'll completely fail to get published and/or sell.

It's kinda funny looking back at this story, though, because it has something like 14-15k words total over eight chapters, and Success (the book I'm working on) has a similar size so far but with only two chapters. My writing style has completely transformed because of my changing goal with writing. I'm choosing almost every single word very selectively because I want that word in a certain spot. The first page alone took me like four hours, no joke. :P

Hoping to see "Success" someday in print.

Sincerely,
Yourself

*cowers in fear at your obvious anger*

Ahem.

*straightens and clears throat*

I just looked up how long it takes to write a novel and found a most inspiring quote: "Rather than worrying about how long it takes to write a novel, concentrate on writing the best manuscript within your ability to create." ^_^

A great novel might take a person five years to write. Or it might take them a year. Just a summer to write a great, publishable novel for the first time...sounds just about impossible. You might be able to complete a rough draft though.

So take your time. Do a little research if you have to. 1 page in 4 hours??? That would drive me insane! Maybe I'm just an amateur, but my policy is: write down the basics first and then polish (your words, your characters, your plot). A first draft doesn't have to be perfect...

I hope this post wasn't just a babble of useless words. Of course, you're free to completely ignore this.

And I'm not your only reader, unless you were referring to Wizard originally, in which case, I'm also a reader!

I'm more concerned with getting the first draft done and written in words, namely the entire story. I've revised what I do have several times and I am nowhere near happy with what is there. But, I think that's a good thing. Once I get the actual story itself finished, I can go back and spend twice as much time as it took to write the book for polishing it and getting everything to my own level of O.C.D. perfection. Then I can have someone proofread it and tell me how much it sucks so I can review it some more. :P

I'm actually not all that mad about it, though. I am slowly starting to realize just how much I love writing. I really could spend all of my time learning how to write better, and have.

P.S. I was actually trying to be funny by writing a letter to myself, the only person I thought would ever read that post. :P (Mental Note: Scratch all attempts at humor out of book)

Hmm, I wasn't in a great mood when I read that, so I assumed you were frustrated with your writing (like I am :@ ). That, and I'm bad with sarcasm... :(

Glad to hear you love writing so much...I wish I had that much dedication. But really, it's easier to write the whole thing if you don't go over it a million times for the first draft. O_o

Edit: You're doing a review thread! I'm tempted to ask for a review for my story, but I think mine's too silly for serious reviews such as the ones you're giving out. It seems you're not going to revamp this story, so I'll stop posting here randomly. Sorry... XD
