“You are naïve, woman,” the chief interrupted, stating his opinion frankly in his swift speaking style. “They knew that we would be upset by the loss of anyone, let alone one of our young. Inthi must’ve been in the wrong place at the wrong time; I don’t suspect they specifically targeted him. However, we have no more time to waste chatting idly here about it. They have him as hostage and I expect they will use him to barter with us. Let us be away.”
It took very little time at all to assemble the men of the small village into a ready state. Athos found himself joined in without any words, but he was quickly hesitant about the situation.
Turning to Jenke despite the fact that the others were leaving, Athos asked, “Elder! Is this a good idea? What if they want us to go to their village and they secretly ambush and kill everyone here? Doesn’t it seem like a set-up to you?”
“Athos, waste no time thinking such things,” Jenke respond sharply, turning him back towards the group. “They have as many capable men as we do. They would never take such a risk and leave their place unguarded.”
“But-!”
“Go!”
With a push to the back from Jenke’s cane, Athos was forced into leaving with the others. However, he could not help but feel as if something was about to go terribly wrong. He feared the hastiness of the village’s preparations, especially since only the old, the young, and the women were left to attend to the village. With a hard gulp, he dashed ahead towards the group, securing his sheathed sword tightly to his belt as he caught up with them.
