Chapter 4
The winters in Rellekka were unforgiving, but were like summer's warm kiss compared to the frozen wasteland Acheron.
Brundt didn't know how long they had spent traveling this frozen tundra. The sun never set this far up north, making it impossible to keep track of the days, but it felt like they had been wandering for weeks and their supplies had run barren days ago. They had taken as much supplies as Rellekka's storage could afford and had planned to supplement that with what they could scavenge from the land, but there was no life in Acheron. There was no soil, only pure ice, and no algae or wildlife as far as they could see. They had no map or compass, instead having to rely on Koshei's instincts. "He will know the way," Baba Yaga had originally told them before teleporting the two away.
"We should stop here for a little while," Koshei said, and Brunt was happy to oblige. He had never been this exhausted in his entire life. He had lost a tremendous amount of weight on their journey, and the formerly heavyset chieftain was now merely skin and bones. Koshei, on the other hand, looked as healthy as ever. Curiously, Brundt had not seen him eat or drink once over their entire journey.
The chieftain licked his frozen lips and spoke. "I can't go on like this, Koshei. I'm just slowing you down. You'll have to go on without me."
Koshei shook his head. "You didn't leave me behind when you found me frozen in the ocean, and I'm not going to leave you behind now. Just sit, rest, and take as much time as we need. We're almost there now, I can feel it."
"Damn you Koshei, you're a stubborn one alright. Never leave a man behind, that's what I always said. But if we don't reach our destination soon you might not have a choice. I don't think I'm going to last much longer. Gods I would kill for some ale right now."

They sat in silence for a while longer before Koshei spoke again. "You never questioned me about my past. You've been kind to me these past few years and respected my privacy, but I haven't always been so kind in return. Now that it looks like we're nearing the end of our journey, I think it's only fair I tell you what I know."
"Yeah?" Brundt replied, leaning in close to listen.
"I don't know much about the past or the man I use to be. I remember a few fragments, but none of them good. I remember desolated battlefields and destroyed villages, with bodies and blood everywhere..." I took him a few minutes to clear his head and resume speaking. "I'm not human, although I imagine you've already guessed as much. I can eat and drink, although I have no need to and only do so to stop others from becoming scared."
"But if you're not human... what exactly are you?"
"I don't know," Koshei sighed. "When I first woke up Rellekka I thought I was just like everyone else. I look human, but over time it became abundantly clear that I was different from everyone else. Aside from having no need for food, water, or sleep, I would find myself getting these horrible, inhuman urges. I would become overcome with a desire to hurt and kill. Instead of being repulsed by these terrible thoughts I'd actually feel... joy? I was the strongest, and I felt pleasure in my thoughts of killing and mangling the weak and unworthy. And these thoughts scared me. People shouldn't think that way. People should find pleasure in such things."
"That's why you always acted so detached, isn't in Koshei? You were afraid of hurting those that you care about."
Koshei nodded. "I was a liability. I was afraid of growing close to someone only to end up hurting them. I thought that as I lived with the clan and spent more time among other people that such feelings of hate would go away, but that just wasn't the case."

"I guess the fact of the matter is that we can't escape from who we really are. In the end I'm no better than Skrae."
"That's not true and you know it!" Brundt yelled. "You're nothing like that monster. The Koshei I know wouldn't hurt a butterfly. Maybe a three-headed dragon that threatened the village, but not a butterfly! You've been good to us, Koshei. You're one of our clan and we care about you. You know, I was quite the hell-raiser in my day, always rushing from one battle to the next. And I did some bad things on the battlefield, things that I'm not battlefield. But I changed, and so can you. I found a good woman and was able to settle down. I was able to put that lust for blood and battle behind me, and so can you. I was able to change for you Caroline, my little girl." Brundt spent the next several minutes crying, before the cold and his emotions got the best of him and he passed out.
Koshei grabbed him and threw him over his shoulder, thinking about what the chieftain had said as he walked. Maybe Brundt was right and there still was a chance for him to change. That was assuming he was able to survive the battle to come, though. Even this far north he could sense and incredible power. Or rather, the power of several thousand beings that had come together as one single entity, and at its center was a hatred so strong that it could only belong to one person: Skrae.
"The dragonkin shall pay for all the pain he has caused," Koshei muttered as they reached their destination: an ancient oak tree. It was the largest Koshei had ever seen, with brilliant green leaves that seemed impervious to the desolate wasteland around them.
"Hello, Koshei," a woman's voice spoke from behind him. "I've been expecting you."
