I thought it might entertain somebody to know that I spent a good 10 minutes sitting here trying to think of something sufficiently amusing and clever to say, but upon realization of the utter failure that resulted from that pursuit I disappointedly gave up and wrote this post.
Happy new year.

Varrock square was busy with action. Townsfolk were roaming back and forth between stores in the mid day traffic. At the fountain in the center of the square lay a lone beggar with his arm draped over his face to keep the sun from beating down on him too strongly. It was at the moment that he decided to peel back his sleeve to look up into the sky that a human-like obstruction came into view. Before he had the chance to move, a fellow human landed on the edge of the fountain right next to his head. The beggar rolled off the fountain in shock and landed on the ground. His head tilted up to the man who mysteriously appeared out of thin air above him.
"Sorry for disturbing you," Tash apologized to the baffled man on the cobblestone road as he leapt from the fountain.
"How...how did you do that?"
"The appearing act? It was teleportation. Believe it or not, I was just in Hemenster a moment ago." Tash paused to look himself over and make sure everything made it through the trip in tact. His vision then swapped over to his surroundings and he was washed over with nostalgia. "Looks like Magenta was right, this is definitely the Varrock that I remember."
The rest of the citizens seemed to have missed Tash's entrance. To him it was a good thing, as it meant he could proceed without being hassled over his small magical feat. He dug a hand into his pocket and pulled out the collection of notes that Rich had given to him the day before. A small map of Varrock and the woods off to the east of it was sketched on one of the pieces of paper. A path was drawn to an X not too far off from the Jolly Boar Inn located to the north east of Varrock. After stuffing the stack of papers back into his pocket, he began walking towards the eastern side of Varrock.

The buildings lining the road barely differed from when Tash was only a child roaming the streets of the large city. A few licks of paint on some and a number of scratches and chips on others were the only changes. As he came to an intersection in the road he paused. He glanced off to his right as a wave of nostalgia passed over him. Four houses down, left turn, two houses down on the right. His old residence sat alone in the recesses of the residential district. He sighed under his breath and continued walking, as he did not wish to reminisce over such things. Soon enough the bank passed by with its own sect of business flowing back and forth through the wide open doors. From there the exit was only a short walk, and just like that Tash had traveled half way across the known world in only half an hour.
Tash consulted the map in his pocket once more. "It'll probably be easier if I follow the road up to the Jolly Boar and then go from there. It's been way too long since I was last out here, and I really don’* want to travel too far north."
The fancy cobblestone road that weaved through Varrock died out into a plain dirt trodden path once it left the city gates and then split in two directions. The northern path led up towards the Jolly Boar Inn as well as towards the gates into Morytania, the dreaded dead lands thriving with vampires, werewolves, and other ghoulish monsters. The southern path led to a much more joyful location, that being Lumbridge as well as the northern reaches of the Kharidian desert. Tash set his sights on the northern road and began his journey out into the forest.
Judging from the location of the sun when Tash had first arrived in Varrock, he believed it to be midday. The walk to the Jolly Boar Inn would roughly take three hours, which would leave him plenty of time to go out and search the woods for this rune altar. He once again stashed the papers in his pockets and started walking.
