Adam heard what it was before he saw it. A loud boom echoed up to all the people on the wall. Perhaps it was the sound of giant footsteps. Boom, boom, boom, the sound came again and again. No, it wasn’t the footsteps of some kind of behemoth. There were so many, so numerous, but every thunder-like sound was so rhythmic, like they were in time with one another. A giant cloud of grey dust was being stirred up along the horizon, as whatever it was that was coming got closer. No, it wasn’t some monstrous being, walking in from The Wilderness. It was far worse than that.
Boom, boom, boom, the sounds came again, one after the other, rhythmically timed. Then Adam saw what it was and his eyes went wide in horror. A gigantic head burst forth from the cloud of dust, followed by another, and another. Hundreds of heads, shoulders, torsos, legs, broke through the dust and began spreading out in an arc across The Wilderness. Every face held an expression of twisted rage and anger. Every set of eyes overflowed with burning crimson. Every horn was crooked, curved, and sharpened to a deadly point. Every mouth was filled with razor sharp teeth that jutted out of the creatures’ maw and glinted in the early morning sun. Every single one was a demon of the most fearsome kind.
The monstrosities that came out of the dust scared everyone off the wall. All of the creatures were the size of a small house. The air warped and shifted visibly about each demon, its broad, flat chest, massive forearms and biceps, and hulking legs appeared out of the dust as the army approached. Each creature dragged its oversized arms through the dirt, clearing a swathe of land away with each tightly balled fist. The dead trees in The Wilderness caught fire as they passed by and smoke soon filled the air behind them. The army was spreading further, heading across the whole of Gielinor to burn it to the ground.
