As Cade looked round he could see the dragon on the other side of the house. Again, the enormous creature began inhaling, and He ducked down behind one of the tree’s massive roots as a surge of hot air rushed past.
Looking up, he saw one of the other strangers hanging off the edge of the hole that had been burnt in the side of the house. Suddenly he remembered that he’d left the only weapon or tool he had back in the house. After hitting his head on the gnarled bark of the root several times while cursing under his breath, he ran out to try and help, only to find someone already preparing to lift him back in.
Hoping the dragon was still occupied, he ran back over to the elevator, this time scrambling over it and climbing up the ladder. Then he started to have second thoughts. There was no way he could get the instrument without being seen, and it was most likely flammable. He shoved all of those thoughts out of his head, and kept climbing.
When he got to the top he ran as fast as he could straight past the creature’s line of vision, hoping to distract its attention from the man dangling over the edge and the woman trying to help him up. Grabbing the lute from the floor again, he wondered how he was going to defend himself against a fire breathing lizard with something made of wood when a couple of the strings caught on the edge of one of the pieces of still unburnt furniture.
This cause a blast if air to knock him back, almost throwing the instrument out of his hands. He stood up, holding the weapon curiously, before snapping back to reality and turning his attention toward the dragon. Hopefully by now the other two had had time to recover and get away from the edge of the hole.
