Ah - I meant only Eltonck’s first letter, not the whole batch!

Also, yw! I like the new letters too.

Oh! What about the first letter do you think is off? I think of that one as an introduction to the setting where the rest of the letters take place... I'm not sure how to adjust it.

I don’t think you need an introduction. For the story to begin “I made a friend today...” is a perfect way to start. That author is a gnome becomes clear quickly.

So I did spend some time changing it so that Guthix was the one providing the thoughts of grandeur, not the gnome. After all he doesn't enter his slumber until the end of the first age, and I haven't really employed him that much. What do you think? Any chance we can salvage this, or not really?

Notes of the scout Ma’akra, year 307, the second age

My party saw a strange creature and what appeared to be a small invading party composed of vyres. It was almost humanoid in form and very large, colored in shades of grey and wearing an imperial vest of purple. But what struck us the most is that it seemed on the brink of death, nay, already dead. Yet if this was necromancy it was a magic beyond anything we have ever heard of… the vyres were not puppeteering the creature, in fact it almost seemed to be leading the group.

Then before our very eyes the skeletal creature… changed. We thought it had disappeared but in its place we saw a much smaller creature. A gnome. It was the most innocent looking gnome, shrouded by a party of vyres. The gnome went into the village ahead of the group and we waited.

At this point neither group was aware of our presence. Yet we knew that these Vyres were not on a mission for peace and my own party leader Tana’aka resolved to make their presence known. Knowing that the leader of the Vyres could take on the form of a gnome we assumed the worst, and before long she had formed a plan by which we could ensure that our activities would go undetected and yet could still provide warning to the nomadic peoples before the invasion began.

It was simple: locate the leader of each tribe, scrawl an anonymous note instructing them to destroy it thereafter, and fly under the cover of nightfall to their lodging and deliver the message under the door.

One week later, and their illusions seem to be humming. Let’s hope that is enough.

Notes of the scout Ma’akra, year 323, the second age

We were taken aback by the attack—it was already happening during a standard flyover and we were nearly taken out by a missile.

When Tana’aka and the rest of us found cover, we looked on from a distance and were astounded to see that not only were the vyres deflecting every blow that the dwarves and humans struck, and the dragons melting through their shields, but every last illusion, from ice giants the size of trees to a whole army of gnomes on the other side of the vyres, seemed not to deter the invading party at all. The skeletal master of them all—whatever it was—was leading them past every single one.

We looked on in sadness as the first village fell, then the second. It may take them long to reach the end of Forinthry but… its fall is inevitable.

I like the edit - I think it makes the journal entry and the character of Eltonck more believable!

I appreciate the feedback. I'm still working on more... I'm having a lot of fun with this! Next up is some further expansion on Zaros' attempts to instate a proper greenhouse keeper, and Padomenes' reaction to the aftermath of the nuke.

Notes of the greenhouse keeper, year 607, the second age

Our lord Zaros has instructed me to set up a greenhouse in this area, believing the local area to be ideal for experimenting with plants of various kinds. He seems to believe this will be the salvation of the Ilujanka.

I do not doubt his motives, but the task itself just seems hopeless. Me, a demon, managing agriculture? I know he thinks highly of me and would only entrust this task with someone he has full faith in, but I seriously worry if this is the best course. I haven’t the slightest idea where to start.

Let’s start with planting some toadflax and marigolds, and see where this takes us.

Notes of the greenhouse keeper, year 1957, the second age

Let’s take a record of what these dimwit custodians managed to accomplish all these years, and go from there.

First, a demon by the name of Tak’Gash Laklyn, years 607 through 1048. She planted pretty flowers and luscious herbs. Made the place look nice. Wonderous. Useless.

Next, a Mahjarrat by the name of Lakosta, years 1048 through 1500. She had the terrific meandering idea to combine the essence of various creatures into a nihil creature, which are now Zaros’ favorite pets. I guess it’s no small feat getting energy of the fabled Mah to appear on Gielinor, but to what end? If there was a goal in mind, it certainly died with her during that godforsaken ritual.

Then came Nathaniel Drakan, years 1500 through 1957. Entitled bastard. Thought he could leverage his connections simply because he was from an upper class family. He turned the whole greenhouse into his personal potion-making factory and got blood everywhere.

That leaves me to clean up this mess and figure out what next. None of these people got anywhere close to solving the dilemma of what to do with the Ilujanka. If I knew anything about blood magic or divination I might try to take a stab at seeing what I could make of these materials. But this energy is really finicky stuff… the last time I tried to approach a wisp I got thrown against the wall.

Let’s start by planting things and making potions. Everything we can find. Something in this goddamn place has to work.
