"I am sorry that you should have to bear the burden of losing everyone you ever knew, especially at such a young age," the King of Varrock said softly, but then his voice rose in anger, a passion burned behind his words and righteous anger flashed in his eyes, "But I swear that those responsible will pay for their crimes tenfold. When the final battle occurs the ground will taste so much goblin blood it chokes! This I swear by Saradomin!"

"Thank you for that sir," Maly*tryx said softly. Regaining his composure a bit he then stated importantly "The Elven King and your delegate Gul'dan await your most esteemed company, my Kings."

"Then by all means, send them in at once," the King of Ardougne said. Maly*tryx quickly exited the room, and shortly after that the Elven King entered followed by Gul'dan, who bowed to both the Kings of Ardougne and Varrock with a fluid ease. "My boy, there is no need for you to bow to use, for it is you who has helped unite us in our cause," the King of Ardougne stated.

"As it is, you are Kings, and should be accorded with proper respect," Gul'dan answered.

"Nonsense my boy," the King of Varrock laughed, "You have done more to aid the war effort than both of us old men together."

"Be that as it may," Gul'dan responded, "But now is not the time for us to argue over whether I should bow to you or not, for Galaphile, King of the Elves has joined us, and I believe he should be filled in on the situation. I am afraid to tell you too that not all of the news will come from you, for we have received disturbing news from Seren."

"Indeed," Galaphile said. His voice was light and musical, and his accent was exotic but melodic. "In addition to that I'm afraid that the dark elves under the leadership of Cara'ctir have joined forces with Zamorack, and even now head for the fortress of Gornakhan. But worse than that is the news my goddess brought me." And as he explained it everyone's faces lit up with fear.

I know conversation isn't everything, but it does keep the plot going in ways that other things don't. While I don't particularly like the conversational chapters they bring the plot to a place where I can put in some action.

Chapter 15

"And so they have been warned of the presence of another great power on Glienor," the man said. The cloaked figure's eyes flashed with interest.

"What else did she say of this great power?" it asked, a strong feeling of desperation pervading his voice, "I must know anything else that you were told of this great power!"

"I am afraid that all my King told me was that the gods have warned us of another great power in the land, which may aid Saradomin or Zamorack, or neither, depending on the nature of this entity," the man said.

"My master will wish to hear of this, as it will be of major importance in the coming battle. I am sure of it!" the cloaked figure snarled, and as he did so the darkness surrounding him thickened, and when it thinned again he was
gone.

***

Gul'dan walked slowly from the meeting chambers. The three Kings, and the Dwarven King who arrived halfway through the meeting, had discussed the battle for at least the last six hours. When the topic of the defences of Karna'khesh came up Gul'dan quickly volunteered to go inspect them, as he was eager to get out of the room.

The fortress of Karna’khesh was an ancient one, built in the glory days of the dwarves, when they were at home as much above ground as below it. For hundreds of years they prospered due to trade with the gnomes, elves and humans, who found dwarven metal-smithing to be finest found on Glienor. It was about halfway through these glory days that the dwarves constructed the twin fortresses of Karna'khesh and Gornakhan. For years they were the capitals of the dwarven kingdom, and the dwarven king himself made his home in Karna'khesh.

For many years the fortresses had prospered, and before long dwarves began to pour in from other lands to inhabit the fortresses, and when they were full thriving towns and villages were formed outside of their walls.

When the Elfday War started all elves were fighting against the dark elves, and so trade with the elves all but dried up. Around the same time forces of darkness from the north occupied the attention of the race of man, and so trade with them ground to an almost complete stop too. With the death of the Dwarven King Realgarr, who had no children and had named no heir, the different dwarven clans all squabbled for the throne.

Eventually two factions were formed: The Karzahks, or those who believed that the king's nephew should take the throne; and the Zarkohns, who felt that the leadreship should be entirely reworked and a different dwarven family, the Duergar should take over. The Duergar could trace their roots back to the dwarven kings of old, but they was a vein of slight insanity in the family, and they could oft be found associating with those who operated on the other side of the law.

The Zarkohns quickly took over the fortress of Gornakhan, where the Duergar family lived. In Gornakhan the Duergar were highly respected, and support for the Zarkohns quickly grew.

However, the family of Realgarr lived in Karna'khesh, as did the rest of his family. They were well loved by the people there, and support grew rapidly for the Karzahks. With the enitre dwarven nation on the brink of war the leader of the Karzakhs, Karnokh, met in secret with the leader of the Zarkohns, Zarkash. Eventually the decision was made for the dwarven nation to split, with the Karzahks in control of Karna'khesh and for the Zarkohns to control Gornakhan.

This plan was accepted by the dwarven people, but before the split was completed a great plague swept across Glienor. The dwarves, who forgot their differences in the time of danger, quickly decided that the safest place for them was underground. They fled into old caves in the mountains, and in the need to survive banded together again.

At the beginning they were forced to fight with cave goblins, troglodytes and in the deeper reaches, one particularly fierce black dragon. However, the dwarves quickly distinguished themselves as fierce fighters and gained control of large amounts of the caves. By the time the dwarves were settled underground the leaders of both parties were dead, and their differences were completely forgotten in the fight for survival and the need to civilise the caves.

The only group that still fought for control was the Duergar family and their few supporters, but when they found that there was very little support for them anymore they went even deeper into the caves. After this little was known of what happened within the Duergar, however it is known that they survive still, but they are a small group and rarely mix with the other dwarves.

After the departure of the dwarves their fortresses were abandoned for over a century. However as man regrouped after the devastation of the plague they found the fortresses. Karna'khesh was taken over by those who supported the god Saradomin, who many men had turned to for help after the plague. However, another god was gathering power, and the forces of Zamorack took over Gornkhan.

This Gul'dan had read in the library of Karna'khesh in the short amounts of time he had at the fortress in between his trips. Walking around Karna'khesh he found himself marvelling at the talent of the dwarven stone masons who had made the fortress. After completing a single lap of the fortress, a feat that took him over four hours, he returned to the meeting chamber to report his findings.

Quickly, before I read chapter 14, I just saw this. I know I'll forget if I don't mention it now... :P

Near the end of chapter 13, I spotted this paragraph:

'"Nonesense my boy," the King of Varrock laughed, "You have done more to aid the war effort than both of us old men together."'

Nonesense? Methinks that should be nonsense!

Meh, that was a bit of a boring chapter: kinda like a History book. Surely you could have eased all that information into the story gradually, at a later date.

Anyway, I still can't wait for more: a slightly boring chapter won't put me off!

Oh, and there was a spelling error at the very start of the chapter. 'Greta' should be 'greater', methinks :D .
