Chapter 24

Maly*tryx paced his room, bored out of his senses. His only companion was Edlenmin, the acolyte from the temple. Both had desperately wished to join in the army of the Alliance in their battle against Zamorack, but had been denied that chance by Galaphile, King of the Elves. When they approached him about joining the army he said but this: “Neither of you has any experience in fighting creatures such as these: they are evil beyond compare. Despite your noble causes you would do little more than get yourselves killed. In the future your vengeance lies, and in days far off will you exact your revenge upon Zamorack’s forces, but you will not fight today.

A gentle knock on the door split the silence of the room as an axe splits wood, and Edlenmin said “Come in.” The door slid open silently, for such was the workmanship of the dwarves that the hinges stayed smooth and lubricated, and produced no noise. A tall elf entered the room, his feet making no noise upon the stone floor.

“Mysterious are the events that have of late occurred within this fortress, and I was told that you two would be willing to help find out more,” the elf said, “Within the last hour the Varrockian general left in command of the defences mysteriously disappeared. No one knows where he went, and we fear he may have been taken prisoner by Zamorackian forces.”

“Surely not,” Maly*tryx said, “How would they have entered the fortress and spirited him away without anyone noticing?”

“It is indeed strange,” the elf stated, “But he could not have vanished into thin air. Within his room we found an unholy symbol of Zamorack, the chain holding it severed. Also within the room was the general’s sword, split in three by some unholy might. Other than this the room looks untouched. Whatever happened must have happened with incredible speed, for there are no other signs of a fight or struggle within the room.”

“I have met this general before, and he is no weak man. It would take great force to subdue him,” Edlenmin mused.

“Indeed,” the elf agreed, “But even more pressing is the news brought to us by the dwarven miners not an hour ago. They alerted the Dwarven King’s son, Naugrim, that they had heard ‘What was definitely the sound of pickaxes and spades, as well as loud blasts, not five hundred metres off.’ It appears that we are about to be subject to an underground attack.”

“Indeed this news is disturbing,” Maly*tryx said, “By your leave sir, I would go and investigate the general’s room, see if there is not more to be found there.*

*As would I,” Edlenmin added.

“Very well then, I will escort you there personally,” the elf said, gesturing to the door as he did so, “Follow me.”

The general’s chambers were located in the south tower of the castle, quite near to the top. When they reached the entrance to his chambers they were greeted by two solemn looking guards, one standing on either side of the door. “State your name and business here,” the one on the left said dully, obviously bored out of his pants.

“I am Baragûr, of the house of Rawbrannon. These are Edlenmin and Maly*tryx, and they are my guests,” the elf stated clearly and confidently.

“Baragûr we know of, and he has authority to enter, but the other two--” the guard said hesitantly.

“I personally vouch for them, as does the King of Varrock,” Baragûr said and the guard relented. The guard on the right pulled a large bronze skeleton key from his belt and slotted it into the keyhole. Turning it sharply to the right he muttered under his breath “laden,” and the door swung open.

Baragûr entered the room first, followed by the two humans. At first looks the room appeared to be completely normal, but then their eyes were drawn to the unholy symbol of Zamorack lying on the floor and the shattered sword also on the floor.

Edlenmin knelt down to examine the sword, and while doing so notice scorch marks on the floor near to where the sword lay. Taking note of them he turned to look at the sword.

The sword was indeed a fine piece of workmanship. Crafted by the dwarves from the finest mithril a mere three years previous to congratulate him on his promotion, for long was he known by the dwarves as a friend, and indeed he fought alongside many of them in border skirmishes when he was younger. Engraved down the blade was his name, Ethir. The hilt was relatively simple, and forming the pommel was a large ruby.

It had been split at two different points: one right above the hilt and the other just over halfway down the blade. The splits were jagged and about them there was a fell air. The splits were evidently caused by magic, as no weapon could break mithril so brutally.

Baragûr and Maly*tryx were examining the unholy symbol, something neither of them had ever seen up close. It was crafted from silver, but the unholy power that imbued with the might of Zamorack gave it a dark and fell feeling, and neither of them felt comfortable while touching it. The chain that slipped neatly through the hole at the top had been cleanly severed, probably by Ethir’s blade. Engraved in the back of the symbol was the word Zamorack with a lightning bolt on either side.

Before any of them could examine anything any further a guard appeared in the doorway, panting. “All men are needed to help defend the fortress, the dwarves reckon that the Zamorackians are no more than an hour away, and if they take the fortress all hope is lost. Baragûr and the men leapt up and ran out the door, ready to help defend Gielinor against evil.

Just finished, great story! defenitly going on my recommendations post.
One thing I noticed in previous chapters was that you reapeted "like waves crashing on rocks" (or something similar) alot. with your spectacular talent surely you could think up a different simile?

All in all - wonderful, cant wait for more.
