Chapter 23
The ogres and trolls fell back before the furious onslaught, and were systematically cut down by the elves, men and dwarves. Gul’dan looked around the battlefield after the last of the ogres was slain by an elven mage, and almost retched, for the plains were literally littered with the dead and dying, the ground stained by their blood. He was soon joined by the Kings, but before they could attempt to help the wounded the gates of Gornakhan opened once more, and from them spewed goblins in numbers never seen or imagined by the forces of the Alliance.
Galaphile called out to the men, elves, and dwarves and once more the army formed up. Magic crackled from the hands of the elven magi in an attempt to cut back on the number of goblins the foot soldiers would have to fight. To the dismay of all who looked on the magic never came close to the goblins, as by some unseen might they were shielded from it. Undeterred the magi channelled even more of their power at the goblins to no avail: whatever protected them was beyond the might of the elves.
Seeing this and sensing a feeling of hopelessness from the troops gathered behind him Galaphile raised his voice and said “They may be protected from our magic, but they are not protected from physical weapons!” And as he said this he withdrew from the ground next to him a goblin spear and hurled it with inhuman speed at the front ranks of the goblins. The spear flew straight and true, and with great might did it strike the leader of the goblin charge, impaling him along its length.
“Behold! They still bleed!” the King of Varrock yelled out. From his sheath once more his sword was pulled, and beside him the other kings did the same, and as one they commenced yet another charge. The two forces met as a wave meets the rocks of a cliff and the goblin line was broken in two different locations, but the rifts were soon mended.
